District 1A Tournament

TUMWATER — Five Hoquiam players advanced to the final day of the District IV Class 1A tournament on Thursday at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.

Josh Burgher led the Grizzly contingent with an 80, three strokes behind first-round leader Sean Ball of Seton Catholic.

Hoquiam’s Ryan Cole, Tayte Witherbee, Brayden Dayton and Tyler Sundstrom also survived the 18-hole cut. Sundstrom birdied the 17th hole to make the cut on the number with a 92.

“We as a team battled all day,” Hoquiam coach Larry Dublanko said. “The conditions were obviously wet, but we were able to prevail in many ways.”

Montesano’s Payson Parker, Ben Royer, Ben Wills and Matthew Plato also qualified for the final 18 holes, as did Elma’s Killian Acuff.

The 36-hole tourney concludes today, with the top finishers advancing to state next spring.
