Grays Harbor falls to Penninsula and Edmonds at weekend tournament

Grays Harbor drops two at Triton-Pirate Classic

After opening the season with three straight wins, Grays Harbor College’s men’s basketball team dropped two games at the Triton-Pirate Classic over the weekend in Edmonds.

Grays Harbor (3-2 overall) opened the season with three wins over the three-day Native American Classic Nov. 15-17, fell 71-56 to Peninsula on Saturday followed by a 94-75 loss to host Edmonds on Sunday.

Tristan Schoepf scored 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Chokers on Saturday followed by Matt Pearson and Ryan Pearson, each of whom scored 12 points.

On Sunday, the Chokers were led by Genuine Powell, who led Grays Harbor with 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Powell also led the Chokers on the boards with seven rebounds, five of those on the defensive glass.

Michael Sampson added 21 points and Zyare Ruffin finished with 12 points as the only other Chokers to score in double figures.

Grays Harbor will be back in action when it takes on Big Bend in the Skagit Valley College Turkey Tourney at 5 p.m. on Friday in Mt. Vernon.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Umpqua 96, Grays Harbor 27

The Grays Harbor women’s basketball team moved to 0-2 on the season after suffering a 96-27 loss to Umpqua on Saturday in Roseburg, Oregon.

The Chokers struggled on the offensive end, making 10-of-44 shots in the game (22.7%).

Seven players scored in double figures for Umpqua, led by Cielo Gonzalez’s 17 points.

Grays Harbor’s Armonnie Byrd led the Chokers (0-2) with 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

Indyah Direaux added eight points for the Chokers, which will take a break over the holiday before facing Clark College in its home opener at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
