Harborites win openers at Grays Harbor Raceway

ELMA — Veteran drivers Jack Parshall of Hoquiam, Tom Sweatman of Cosmopolis and young Harborite Tyler Sundstrom were among the main event winners as the Grays Harbor Raceway season opened on April 21.

Parshall took the street stocks and Sweatman the modified main event. Sundstrom prevailed in the outlaw tuners main, while Tyler Anderson of Everett won the 360 sprint car feature.

Outlaw Tuners

The defending series champion in this classification, Sundstrom outdueled Cory Sweatman of Aberdeen in the main.

After overtaking Don Briggs Sr. of Wishkah and Max Sanford of Belfair to take over second place, Sweatman charged into the lead with one lap remaining.

Racing side by side, the vehicles driven by Sundstrom and Sweatman collided in the final turn — causing Sweatman’s car to spin out but leaving Sundstrom’s with a flat tire. Sundstrom, however, was able to keep control of his car down the home stretch to take the checkered flag.

Sanford wound up second and Briggs finished third.

Street Stocks

Parshall led from the outset to take the street stocks main.

Montesano driver Scott Fritts chased the Hoquiam driver early, but was passed by Tom Hecker of Spanaway. Although Hecker remained on Parshall’s back bumper late, the Hoquiam driver took the checkered flag.

Ryen Haney of Elma overcame a mid-race accident to place third.

Modifieds

Sam Carlisle, another Cosmopolis driver, led for the first seven laps but spun to a stop in Turn Two of the eighth lap.

Sweatman assumed the lead on the restart. Kyler Moore of Seabeck, who started near the rear of the pack, repeatedly challenged but was forced back into the second position on a series of restarts.

Moore wound up second, with Shelton’s Scott Miller third.

360 Sprint Cars

Leading every lap of the feature race, Anderson notched his first career main-event win.

Kelso’s John Stuart was among the front-runners early, but clipped a tractor tire on the inside of Turn Three, upending his car. He walked away from the crash uninjured.

Lance Sargent of Spanaway placed second and Jay Cole of Shelton placed third.

Racing resumes Saturday, with the 360 sprint cars, modifieds, street stocks and midgets featured. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with racing beginning at 7.
