Eagles rally in fourth quarter to nip White Salmon, 35-34

The Eagles (1-1) compiled 379 yards of total offense.

Cody Vollan passed for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion in the final minute to give Elma a dramatic win over White Salmon in a non-league game Friday night at Davis Field.

The Eagles won 35-34.

Vollan hit Brady Shriver with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left, Vollan followed that up with a pass to Cameron Donofrio for the 2-pointer and the winning margin.

Vollan completed nine of 14 attempts on the night for 211 yards with two passing TDs and another rushing . He had a 13-yard scoring pass to Taitum Brumfield in the third quarter.

The Eagles trailed 21-7 at halftime, but outscored the Bruins 28-13 in the second half.

“This was an enormous victory,” said Elma head coach Ron Clark. “We were down 21-7 at half and we just kept battling — they kept making plays. On all three sides of the ball things went well and things went bad, but the kids kept battling.”

Brumfield carried the ball 17 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles, while wide receiver Josiah Wyeth-Jones had two catches for 71 yards. The Eagles (1-1) compiled 379 yards of total offense.

Clark noted Elma’s physicality in Friday night’s game.

“We kept hitting harder and the kids’ conditioning and physicality kind of wore them down,” he said

Clark noted the play of the defensive line, Vollan and defensive back Ray Billerbeck, who had two interceptions.

“Very impressive young men today — they kept right after it,” Clark said of his team. “It’s a great night to be an Eagle.”

Elma (1-1) will travel to Aberdeen for the Bobcats’ homecoming game on Friday night at Stewart Field.
