Simpson Says

Here at Simpson Elementary School we have numerous events going on.

Before winter break, we had the Bulldogs of the Month assembly.

Principal Klinger announced that Montesano won the Food Bowl competition once again.

Montesano beat Elma by collecting 14,030 pounds of food and $33,457.43. Elma came in with 13,220 pounds and $20,627.61. Students from both Montesano and Elma should be proud of themselves for helping people in need.

Put your hands together for the Bulldogs of the Month: third grade — Reagan Alvarez, Chase Tupper, Carter Ames and Isaiah Bush; fourth grade — Caleb Bruland, Rochelle Baldwin, Spencer Mahugh, Aurelia Martens and William Townsend; fifth grade — Henry Higgins, Peyton Damasiewicz, Alyssa Maldonado and Cohen Andersen; sixth grade — Kenneth Dane French, Bailey Fuller, Mckynnlie Dalan and Aric Jacklin.

These amazing students earned a certificate for showing generosity to their teachers and to other students. Generosity here at Simpson means to give something to somebody without being asked.

Jan. 13 was the Geography Bee. There were lots of participants from grades five and six and two judges: sixth-grade teachers Ms. Kukla and Ms. Irving with Mrs. Jensen as the emcee. It was long, but it was fun. The two finalists had to finish the Bee in the office because of the challenging questions. In the end the winner was sixth-grader Emily Schallon, and second place runner up was sixth-grader Dakota Bowman.

Simpson has had fun things going on in January as well. During the week of Jan. 23-27 we participated in “Kindness Week.” Our school counselor, Mrs. Wisdom, provided us with activities designed to show kindness to others. There was a “kindness challenge” where students challenged themselves to do as many acts of kindness as possible, as well as some art activities around the theme of kindness to others in the library during lunch recess times.

The Bulldogs of the Month assembly is held at the end of every month. This month, our word of the month is “Courage.” Here at Simpson, courage means to face your fears, and to stick up for yourself and others.

The Missoula Children’s Theater was in town. MCT is an organization that gives kids a chance to perform on stage. This year the musical was The Tortoise vs. the Hare: The Great Race. The play auditions were on Jan. 16 and the performance was on Jan. 21. Missoula Children’s Theater is a great chance for kids to build up their courage. Also, this reporter, Savannah Scott, was in the Missoula Children’s Theater (MCT) production. The play was a blast. I was a reptile with the name Maraca Rattlesnake.

This play was perfect timing for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The play was about the segregation of mammals and reptiles.

In the play, the small town of West Sandy Bottoms was run by mammals. Every commercial always had a reminder of “mammals only.” Then one day, a mammal went missing and the reptiles helped search. The mammals realized that they were wrong, to exclude the reptiles.

At Simpson, we learned about Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the segregation of races. MLK Jr. helped the people of his time learn that segregation is wrong. People are all equal no matter what. At Simpson we focus on the word of the month so this generation of students can grow up hopefully without prejudice.

That’s why Simpson always has the word of the month.
