School year moving quickly; freshman suits up against Forks varsity

A monthly column about life as a youth growing up in Montesano.

Hello everyone, welcome back to another monthly edition of Dog Dayz.

As I said last month, I was going to suit up for the varsity football game with my fellow freshmen teammates. Well, not only did we get to be on the sideline, but we got in the game and we ended up scoring on Forks varsity. The crowd went crazy when we went in the game, and even crazier when we scored. It was pretty amazing being on the field under the Friday night lights. I’m looking forward to next year, when I will be out there for every game.

That was just the start of an awesome Homecoming weekend. Since this was my first Homecoming ever, I didn’t really know what to expect. I was pretty nervous, not knowing how the night would go down. I learned, though, that you just need to relax and have fun, and the night will fly by. How the day went for me was pictures from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in three different places. These places were at the school, in the stands at the football field, and in my neighborhood. As you can imagine, that was a lot of pictures.

From the high school, my date and I, along with five other couples went to Tugboat Annie’s in Olympia for dinner. It was a good dinner, and it was right on the bay. I had not eaten there before. From dinner we went to the dance. We cut a rug and the night went by really quick. Everyone had a great time, and I am glad I went.

I am now two months into the school year. It has gone by pretty fast. This year I have enjoyed my classes so far.

In Washington State history I have learned a lot about how Washington became a state, and I’ve even learned about how Montesano was formed. In biology, I have learned about how and why things live. In digital media, I am becoming a better photographer, editor and am even learning how to use Photoshop. In English, I am learning how to become a better writer. I think it’s helped me with these columns. In weight training, I feel I have become a lot stronger physically and mentally, which will help me in my sports. Finally, in geometry I am learning some pretty crazy, advanced stuff, like alternate interior angles and dodecagonal pyramids. It’s tough at times, but it’s been a fun year so far.

Montesano has been dominating fall sports this year as usual. In football, Montesano is undefeated and played their last regular season game against our rivals the Elma Eagles on Friday, Oct. 28. In volleyball, Montesano went undefeated and had districts. The girl’s soccer team also is headed to districts. Finally, in cross country, the boys and girls have runners in districts, hoping to make state.

As for my season, I am done with football this year. We ended at 4-3, and beat multiple JV teams. All of our losses were to big schools, so overall I am really proud of how our team did. I think we improved a lot as the season went on. I had some awesome coaches and teammates, which makes me excited for next year. I am now moving on to basketball, which officially starts in two weeks.

Other fun things I did this month were going to the Seattle Seahawks game against the Atlanta Falcons. It was a nail-biter, but the Seahawks came out with a great win. My dad took me and two of my buddies. We had a blast. I even got K. J. Wright’s autograph.

This month I also started going to youth group at the Calvary Chapel every week. It has been fun to spend an hour and a half a week with other Christian youth.

Finally, I started a Knowledge Bowl team with five of my friends at school. We practice twice a week, and I’m really looking forward to the meets, which start in three weeks.

Anyway, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this month’s edition of Dog Dayz.
