Dollar General will soon be opening a new store in McCleary.

The company that calls itself “America’s neighborhood general store” has 16,000 locations in 44 states and recently broke ground on what will be one of its newest stores on state Route 108, two blocks north of Beerbower Park.

”We’re very excited to have Dollar General join the McCleary community,” McCleary Mayor Brenda Orffer said Friday after a ceremonial groundbreaking. “It’s a company that started in 1939 and their mission is ‘serving others.’ And that aligns with how we feel here in our city. We want to serve our population and our community. … “I’m hopeful that a store like this would employ several people from our community. We’re happy to have them here.”

The one-story store, which is expected to open in spring or summer, will be almost 10,000 square feet with 30 parking spaces outside. It’s expected to fill about 10 full-time equivalent jobs.

According to their website, Dollar General offers “small neighborhood stores with carefully edited merchandise assortments to make shopping simpler. We don’t carry every brand and size, just those our customers want the most. Dollar General saves you time by staying focused on life’s simple necessities: laundry detergent, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, socks and underwear…and maybe a gadget or two that you just can’t live without.”
