A student-written column from Simpson School in Montesano

Simpson Says

Beep beep. The new year at Simpson has finally arrived. Simpson is so excited that our new year of 2018 has come.

In January we had a lot of fun — like the fun and famous Geography Bee. We are also very excited to find out who the new Bulldogs of the Month will be.

This year’s Geography Bee (aka “geo bee”) has been just as fun as the past Geography Bees. Some of our final contestants studied very hard. You may be wondering what it felt like for some of our contestants. Some of them were nervous and some of them were confident, like Wyatt Garrison. Some contestants were just participating to have some fun and learn, just like Hunter Perkinson, but some were competing to win, like Aurelia Martens. Many of us, even Mrs. Jensen and Ms. Irving (sixth-grade teachers) learned things from our Geography Bee. We give a huge thanks to National Geographic for sponsoring our annual competition, and another huge thanks to Mrs. Teri Esses, our emcee, and our judges, sixth-grade teachers Ms. Jennifer Irving and Mrs. Kyne Jensen.

On Monday, Jan. 15, there was no school as America celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for all that he stood for, and for all that he has done for people of color.

Last month’s word of the month was generosity. To most of us, generosity is something we should use with our friends and family, and maybe even new neighbors. Another way you can show generosity is by donating to charity or working for the community.

This month’s word of the month is empathy — which is the ability to share and understand the feelings of another. Some examples of empathy are to listen to others’ problems without judging them or ask someone if they need help when they are struggling.

Also in the month of January we have started a new year for Little Bulldogs basketball league. Lots of kids have fun, and for most kids it feels good to win, but even if you don’t win try not to give up, just get up and try harder. Some kids may not like basketball so remember there will be many other fun sports to try out. For those who may not like sports there are plenty of other things to do like drum club with Mrs. Lundquist.

As you can see, there are a lot of good and fun things going on in this school. I believe we have a great group of teachers and staff. For all future students, this is a great school and I hope you like it here as much as I do. Also, don’t forget to wish all of our Bulldog of the Month nominees good luck and a thumbs up.
