Celebrating those who care

Elma honors folks who work hard for others

By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin
Vidette Reporter

People are usually named citizens of the year because they’ve spent countless hours and loads of energy volunteering in ways that make their hometowns and workplaces better for everyone. They’re very busy folks. To wit: Tom and Teresa Boling of Elma. Tom is Elma’s fire chief and the transportation supervisor for the Elma School District. Teresa is a dental hygienist for Elma dentist Dr. David Blackett. The couple also has three children, but it’s not just work and family that keeps them hopping.

The Bolings are so intent on what they can do for others that they couldn’t make it to the annual Elma Chamber of Commerce Awards and Recognition Dinner last Friday at the Elma Eagles, where they were named this year’s Citizens of the Year. They were at Disneyland with their daughter, Terra, who performed with Elma High School’s fall Dance/Drill Team. The youngest of the couple’s children, she will graduate in June. It was to be her last performance, “so we needed to be here,” the couple wrote in a letter read at the dinner by their son, Tyson, who accepted the honor for his parents.

Elma FFA members will host their annual Plant Sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, May 5-10, in the Elma High School Greenhouse, located behind the school by the football field. Students grow, care for and market the plants and have hanging baskets, patio bowls, basket buddies and more.

They price their plants competitively to allow students hands-on work experience with greenhouse management and operations. The program is self-supporting, with the proceeds continuing to finance next year’s projects, cover maintenance and operations and assist with FFA state and national travel for competitions and awards.

ELMA – Aberdeen and Elma kept things very close all game and after three extra innings, the Bobcats prevailed, 5-4, in a 2A Evergreen Conference fastpitch showdown on Friday, April 25, at Elma. Runs were at a premium as both starting pitchers went the distance in the 10-inning contest, and were operating smoothly.

$10 million claim filed in McCleary

McCleary resident Tamara Quimby, who says her estranged husband, Kevin Quimby, terrorized her by holding her hostage and threatening to kill her Oct. 21, 2006, has filed a $10 million claim against the City of McCleary. The claim, filed April 1, alleges that other people, including McCleary Police Officer John Graham, had learned long before Mrs. Quimby did that her husband had told others he was going to kill her, but that she had never been warned of that fact. As a result, the claim says, Mrs. Quimby “was attacked and within seconds of being murdered.”

Montesano team captures state Quiz Bowl championship

OLYMPIA — Answer this question: What is the standard unit of measurement used for measuring force? You have 5 seconds.
A team of five Montesano High School seniors answered that question and enough others correctly to top some two dozen teams from across Washington in the SkillsUSA Washington 2008 Quiz Bowl held April 24 at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia. (The correct answer, by the way, is the Newton.)

McCleary changes plan for school

McCleary School Board members adopted a resolution Tuesday giving them the authority to alter the original design plans for the district’s modernization and new construction project. The alterations are needed because it became apparent in March there wouldn’t be enough funding to build a separate new gym. That was noted when the entire project was reviewed at a “value engineering” workshop March 7, attended by all of the project’s engineers, architects, the construction manager and school officials,” said McCleary Superintendent Dan Bolender.

Dogs lose a man in split with Loggers

Sometimes the scorecard cannot convey the full impact of a loss, and Montesano’s opening game loss to Onalaska last Thursday in a 1A Evergreen League doubleheader at Vessey Field on Senior Night was one of those times. After leading, 7-3, in the seventh inning of the first game, the Bulldogs lost a senior leader for the season, and then eventually the game, 8-7. In the nightcap Monte regained their composure and clobbered the Loggers, 23-0.

Bulldog boys, girls winners at Ilwaco
ILWACO – Montesano freshman Mackenzie Sanders was a quadruple winner as she helped the Bulldog girls nab the team title, completing a Montesano sweep of team titles as the Bulldog boys also won their portion of the three-school meet on Thursday, April 24, at Ilwaco.

Montesano fastpitch with impressive sweep
With a dazzling display of hitting, Montesano easily topped Onalaska, 10-0 and 13-0, in a 1A Evergreen League doubleheader on Thursday, April 24, at Crait Field. Montesano junior Aubree Pocklington hit a home run in each of the games, while Bulldog pitchers Mikayla Shumate and Devyn Baker each authored two-hitters.
