2008 WNPA Awards:
Vidette Staff: First Place for Comprehensive New Coverage, for coverage of the hurricane-force storm that ravaged the Grays Harbor area in Dec., 2007.
Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin: A first-place award for “Elma vet to ‘star’ in parade,” a feature story about Dick Hermsen, and a second-place writing award for her story about a father and son who teamed up to rescue a man who collapsed while they were making a hay delivery.
Ad designer Debi Meredith: A first-place award for the “Best Special Section Cover” she created for the 2007 Winter Sports special section.
Debi Meredith, Gloria Kilwien, the newspaper’s advertising manager, and Elaine Rydman, advertising representative: A first-place award presented for the annual “Dear Santa” section in the competition for “Best Special Section for a Special Event or Festival.”
Debi Meredith and Elaine Rydman: A second-place award for Best Use of Clip Art in an ad for “Fishing,” an ad they teamed up to create for Joan Randall at Prudential Grays Harbor Properties.

McCleary Bear Festival two-page spread;
· Best institutional advertising, second place for the
popular Montesano Health & Rehabilitation Center's monthly
"Communicator" spearheaded by Kilwien and designed
by Meredith;
· Best Self-Promotion, Single Ad, second place for an
in-house advertisement telling readers " We get a warm reception
in every family circle;"
· Best black and white Single Ad of less than a full page,
third place for ads developed last year for the Curtis Salgado
Blues in Concert;
· Best Multiple Advertiser Ad; color or B&W, third
place for "Welcome Back," which was blended with Vidette
news and photographic coverage of the return of local soldiers
from Iraq;
· Best Political Advertising, third place for ads designed
for the "Elect Earl Hari" campaign.
Dee Anne Shaw:
· Best Comprehensive Coverage, second place for "Monte
takes surprise vote on firefighter pay " which was the first
in series of articles covering the Montesano City Council and
the Open Public Meetings Act;
· Best General Feature Story, "Montesano couple's
Bahama honeymoon in Hurricane Frances' path," second place
for a riveting story about newlyweds Curt and Peta Crites of
Montesano;
· Best Personality Profile, "She loves books and
kids," third place for a heart-lifting story about Margaret
Nevills' selection as the 2004 Downey Award winner;
· Best Editorial, "Secret meeting shows contempt
for the public," third place for an editorial telling readers
about the Montesano public safety committee's avoidance of news
coverage and its unannounced Sunday morning meetings.
Candace Nelson:
· Best Breaking News story, "Counting once...twice...,"
first place for her coverage of the 2004 election.
Jerrad Kellogg:
· Best Color Photography: Sports Action, first place for
a photo under the headline "Elma splits DH with Tenino."
Reed McQuaid:
· Best Freelance Contribution, first place for "Ritual:
A father reluctantly keeps his promise to 'go out this year,'"
which was serialized during the holidays last year.
Anna Harbell and the staff:
· Best Overall Feature Page or Section, third place for
the "Flashback" page.
It would be remiss of the Vidette to accept an award for
the "Flashback" page without acknowledging the contributions
and assistance of retired school teacher and local historian
Patricia Clemons and the Chehalis Valley Historical
