Damaged 1913 arch is replaced
By Dee Anne Shaw

The arch that stood in front of the lovely home, at which Ford and Ida Hindbaugh operate an adult care facility, was badly damaged during the 2001 earthquake, Mrs. Hindbaugh said. So the couple ordered up a new arch, identical to the original one, to keep the flavor of the home’s heritage alive. The work on the new arch was done by Bill Peters Construction of Aberdeen. The construction company first had to build molds for the new arch, which took several months to complete and were in place in November. |

The Hindbaughs are the owners of the historic “Arland Mansion” south of Montesano off the Devonshire Road. The home — and the original arch — was built in 1913 by James Arland, son of Montesano pioneer, Richard Arland. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw)
Jeff Peters of Bill Peters Construction, and the backhoe operator Stan Vessey of Vessey & Sons, were amazed last October at the effort it took to unseat the original. They say the replica is reinforced with rebar and will never come down. It was a fun project for the companies, they said. |

Through mediation last Monday, the district and the other entities it serves, the cities of Elma and McCleary and Fire District 12 in rural McCleary, reached a tentative settlement over financial issues they had wrangled over since last spring. To become effective, the agreement needs to be ratified individually by the governing bodies of each of the four parties.

By Jerrad Kellogg

ELMA – Following a tightly played quarter-and-a-half, Elma asserted themselves as the dominant team and slowly built up a nearly insurmountable lead by the end of the third quarter and easily cruised to a, 72-52, 2A Evergreen Conference girls basketball victory on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Elma’s High School Gymnasium.

The game-plan early on for both teams was to work the ball down low – Elma was looking to get the ball in the hands of Brandi Thomas, while Hoquiam relied on the post-play of Molly Read – and for the most part the plan worked as Thomas and Read took turns making short-range jumpers to keep the teams even through the first period.
