By Leif Nesheim

MONTESANO — Christmas had barely ended when tragedy erupted in Montesano. A man and two dogs died in a fire that raged in the home of Ronald and Carol Davidson, 218 S. Satsop St.
Everett “Bugs” Davidson, 58, was pronounced dead early Saturday at Grays Harbor Community Hospital.
He was house-sitting for his brother, who had gone to the Little Creek Casino in Shelton for an annual Christmas getaway with his wife in their RV.

Everett Davidson apparently died trying to rescue one of the dogs, which was in the room where the fire started, Montesano Fire Chief Ken Walkington said.
An autopsy determined Davidson died of smoke inhalation, Deputy Coroner Lane Youmans said.

“It’s the economy, stupid.” James Carville’s 1992 Clinton campaign theme was particularly apt in 2009 Grays Harbor. Another year filled with success and championships
By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter
In 2009, East County athletes turned in another fine year with a handful of state titles — the highest prep accomplishments — highlighting a look back at the year in sports.
As the number of days in 2009 dwindles below a week, a recap of the year begins 365 days earlier, with the 2008-2009 winter sports campaign in full swing.

A year ago East County wrestlers were embarking on a season that would produce five state tournament placers, including a lone champion. Following up on his 103-pound 2A regional championship, then-Elma-sophomore Brad Watson went on to garner the state title in the same weight class. His older brother Nick, a senior, also won a regional title at 171-pounds, and then took second place at state.

Stolen truck crashes in Montesano
ELMA — A rural Elma couple is unlikely ever to forget last Monday. But, thankfully, the day wasn’t even more unforgettable.
Preparing just after 5:30 a.m. to leave for an appointment in Seattle, Steve Vessey started up his “tank” of a truck, a black 2002 F350 Ford pickup, so it could warm up.
Fifteen or so minutes later, he also started his wife’s 2009 Dodge Caliber, parked next to his truck in their driveway on El Monte Lane, near Schouweiler Road west of Elma.
But when he ducked back inside to tell his wife Tonnie good-bye and grab some coffee, the day suddenly changed for the retired tree faller and his wife, an Olympia mail carrier.

Eagles top Hawks
ELMA — Hockinson scored the game’s first seven points, but Elma answered with the next 14 to take the lead and set the tone for a 63-33 Class 2A non-league girls basketball victory, Monday, Dec. 28, at Elma’s High School Gymnasium.
With 6-foot-1 Amanda McCarty controlling the paint early for the Hawks, Hockinson came out of the blocks fast, nabbing a 7-0 lead.
Trio of dogs win titles at Vashon
VASHON ISLAND — Behind three individual titles, Montesano placed second at the Vashon Island Invitational wrestling tournament, which included Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A competitors, Monday, Dec. 28, at Vashon Island.
Montesano finished in a tie with Kamiak and Everett for second place behind Class 4A Todd Beamer of Federal Way in the team standings and the three-way tie was broken thanks to the Bulldogs having more individual champions.
Montesano’s Ryan Campbell (171-pounds), Dillon Ford (152) and Jason Franks (145) each prevailed in their respective weight classes.
Garnering a second place for the Bulldogs was Johnny Wood (140), while teammates Cruz Carter (119), Cody Sampair (125), Gabe West (160) and Joe Choi (285) each took fourth.
