Museum is ‘lighting’ up for the Festival

The Chehalis Valley Historical Museum will be open with extended hours during the Festival of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 8. Hours will be noon to 8 p.m.

Students from the Satsop School had the honor of decorating the tree at the Chehalis Valley Historical Museum in Montesano this week. It’s a tradition for school children to decorate the tree for the holidays and in time for Montesano’s Festival of Lights. The Satsop students really got into the spirit of things this year.

Their decorations were made out of actual light bulbs. The students who decorated the tree on Tuesday earned the privilege by being good students with excellent attitudes. Para-educators Carolyn Crouthamel and Sally Parks are credited with spearheading the crafty idea to use actual lightbulbs.

Snow on its way?

The chills of winter have been nipping at us here over the past few weeks. With predicted temperatures expected to be below freezing tonight and Saturday, Grays Harbor may see the first snowfall of winter this week. The rest of the week may be a bit wet, but with temperatures climbing back up into the mid-40s.

Connell beats Montesano, 51-14

Royal, Connell to play for state title

TACOMA – One of the top-four 1A football teams in the state. That is what the Bulldogs have to hang their hats on in 2007, after stepping into a giant-killer role late in the season and knocking off some unlikely foes on their way to one of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires 1A Football Championship semifinal contests on Friday, Nov. 23, in the Tacoma Dome against the top-ranked team in the state.

In the semifinal match-up with Connell, Montesano stayed one step behind the Eagles through much of the first half. Then two quick touchdowns before halftime gave the Eastern Washington powerhouse enough breathing room to break open the game in the second half and go on to post a 54-14 victory.

Dramatic drop in Monte School District’s cash reserves

Fewer students, revenue shortfalls and cost over-runs in several categories during the 2006-07 school year eroded the Montesano School District’s cash reserves from $312,000 to just $60,086, according to a report presented to the board at its Nov. 20 meeting. School Board President Lori Blanchard was shocked, saying “You would not have wanted to be around” when she first saw the report. She was clearly displeased when it seemed answers to her questions about what happened in the various funds weren’t available at the board meeting.

Klinger to run
Chuck Klinger, a lifelong Montesano resident, has announced that he intends to run for Bob Beerbower’s District 1 position as Grays Harbor County Commissioner in 2008. Klinger, 55, is a Democrat, which means he will face off in a primary election against Terry Willis, a Brady farmer who announced last week she also will seek the post.

McCleary ramps in rate increases
Planning next year’s budget, the McCleary City Council approved a 1 percent raise in property taxes at their meeting Nov. 14, to become effective the first of the year. Residents will also see increases in their monthly utility bills early next year, including a 10 percent hike in the cost of electricity. McCleary is one of 17 Washington cities that operates its own electric company, and the city has seen a dramatic decrease this year in the amount of electricity it has been able to sell. Storm water and wastewater rates are also on the rise and will be automatically adjusted annually in the future.

Food Bowl 2007
The 2007 Food Bowl competition, an annual challenge between Montesano and Elma high school students to see which school can collect the greatest amount of food and cash donations to help feed the hungry, begins today, Thursday, Nov. 29. Though it’s been a few years since Elma has won, students there don’t believe Monte has a chance this year. They’ve set a big goal and mean to reach it.

Eagle alums take meet

ELMA – Standout ex-prep wrestlers going back nearly 30 years from Elma and around Grays Harbor gathered again in the Elma High School Gymnasium for another installment of the Elma-Grays Harbor Dual Meet – a fundraiser for the current Elma high wrestling team – on Saturday, Nov. 24. And with 38 wrestlers participating in the competition – including three two-time state champs – the packed gym was treated to an entertaining wrestling display, which ended in a 50-26 Elma Alumni win over the Grays Harbor combine.

Basketball jamborees tip-off winter sports
ELMA — With the last fall sport — football — set to crown champions this weekend, the winter sports schedule featuring basketball and wrestling is ready to take center stage. First up for local hoopsters are the mini-game jamborees for both the boys and girls. “It’s not a game,” Elma boys basketball head coach Marvin Prince said after his team won both of their contests. “But you get a chance to play someone different. It is nice to get out and see how things worked.”
