A piece of Satsop history rubble now
The landmark home at the former Schafer Game Farm burned late Friday night leaving the couple who lived there homeless.

Decades of Satsop Valley history turned to ashes just before midnight last Friday when the former Carl and Mabel Schafer home on the Schafer Game Farm off the Middle Satsop Road literally burned to the ground.

The historic property has been home to Bob and Connie Cutler for more than 20 years. It was built in 1941 by Carl Schafer, the son of Peter Schafer, one of the three logging Schafer brothers who began their huge operation on the Harbor in the 1890s. After retiring, the Schafers began the game farm on their land, and Carl's was the first home built there.

The cause of the horrific blaze isn't known, said Larry Willis, deputy chief of the Brady Fire Station, part of Grays Harbor Fire District 2. Because there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances and there were no major injuries, the fire department won't be investigating, he said.

The store is a popular hang-out for coffee-drinking, tale-telling outdoorsmen

There are quite a few hunters around Montesano who are muttering "Oh, shoot!" these days. Their favorite hunting, fishing and outdoor supply store, Western Sports Unlimited in downtown Montesano, is closing.

The owners, Dick and Rogene Gates, are retiring in order to spend more time hunting and fishing themselves, and in order to have more time with their family, especially their grandchildren. You can look for them this fall at the football games in Cheney where twin grandsons Matt and Zack Johnson of Tumwater both have full-ride football scholarships.

The lifelong Harborites raised five children together - all Monte grads - and now they have 10 grandchildren all of whom are involved in sports or music programs.

Shoemaker, Hiles-Lemmon pick up third straight win

By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter

ELMA Blair Shoemaker, racing out of Yakima, caught a lucky break on lap-14 of the modified feature race when the cars in front of him came upon lapped traffic, had nowhere to go and got involved in a pile-up, handing the lead over to Shoemaker who survived the commotion. From there he needed no more help in picking up his third-straight victory at Grays Harbor Raceway, on Saturday, June 23.

Also picking up their third win in a row were Doug Hiles and Lisa Lemmon of Elma in the cruisers' feature, after passing J.D. Boling and Brad Crawford of Elma on the next to the last lap.

Teacher resignation cites 'extreme' health toll
Another Elma High School staff member has resigned, saying the relationship problems among the staff there have taken an "extreme toll" on her health. The resignation, effective Aug. 31, of science teacher Sally Wright, 52, who was also the district's only "Teacher on Special Assignment" - a sort of teaching coach - was accepted without comment by the Elma School Board at its meeting Tuesday evening. The school's principal, Debbie Parriott, and assistant principal, Tyson Vogeler, resigned just before the end of school year, citing the extreme tensions between the staff as detrimental to their health to the degree they could no longer work there.

Police investigating rash of burglaries in Elma and McCleary
A burglar or burglars apparently shinnied up a downspout at the McCleary School and gained entrance to the school through a second-story window sometime last Sunday night. Evidently, little was stolen, though about half the staff has been on vacation and haven't been able to check what might be missing from their rooms, said Superintendent/Principal Dan Bolender. Meantime, Elma Police Chief Jeff Troumbley said Tuesday that his town has been hit with a rash of burglaries since June 15, including at two Elma schools. Whether the incidents in both cities are related wasn't known at that time.

Chief urges residents to be 'safe and sane' this Fourth of July
Fireworks stands open at noon today, June 28, setting off nearly a week of what public safety officials hope is a "safe and sane" Independence Day celebration. "We want people to have fun, but please, please be safe," Montesano Fire Chief Ken Walkington said. There are no special restrictions in Montesano other than what is allowed under state law. It is legal to use fireworks in the city through midnight Wednesday, July 4, but only those "state legal" fireworks that are approved for retail sale . "Be legal. Be safe and use common sense," Walkington said.

Ken Griffey Jr. back in a Mariner's uniform? I'd bet on it
Opinion by Vidette reporter Jerrad Kellogg: I am usually one to leave well enough alone. But after calling for no more than a warm reception for Ken Griffey Jr. at the June 22, Mariner's game, and then watching the love-fest that ensued a three-and-a-half minute standing ovation reminiscent of a conqueror's welcome that all but disregarded the fact that there was still a game to be played I wondered what could be going through this man's mind?
