Monte’s Hank Moore died Monday at 99

“Hank Moore is the old codger I hope to be someday.”
That’s how Montesano Fire Chief Ken Walkington fondly described Moore on his 98th birthday in January of 2006. The event drew dozens and dozens to the fire hall over the course of the day — all eager to wish the Montesano native well on his birthday as he recovered from an illness that had landed him at Monte Health & Rehab.
Fact of the matter was, his illness had prompted an entire community to realize that the endearing and enormously popular Hank was, indeed, getting old.

Not that Hank would admit age might be catching up with him. He jokingly told everyone that the party was just practice for his 100th birthday and he hoped they would all attend the real celebration in 2008.
Unfortunately, the spirit was willing but Hank Moore’s nearly 100-year-old body gave out early Tuesday, Sept. 25. He died peacefully at home with family members at his side — three months and 17 days short of his 100th birthday.

A project that nearly doubles the size of the Fellowship Hall is well under way.

Members of the congregation at Montesano Presbyterian Church are honoring the legacy of those who came before them with a legacy of their own — a bigger church better suited for the needs of a modern congregation. A 3,000 square foot addition is well under way at the McBryde Avenue church. The addition is phase one of a three-phase plan, Steve Fischback, the church’s pastor, said. |

But with 125 years of history in Montesano behind it, this church isn’t afraid to make long-term plans. “As much as this might be about a lovely new kitchen, a larger Fellowhsip Hall and updated restrooms, all of which immediately add to our own comfort, this is also, and more importantly about creating a legacy for those who will come after us,” he said. |

ELMA – After controlling possession for a good portion of the first half and battling to a 1-1 tie, Elma began losing more possessions than they won and eventually fell, 4-1, to Rochester in a non-league girls soccer match, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Davis Field. |

National steroid ring reaches Monte
Two Montesano men are among more than 124 people across the country who have been arrested in an international steroid bust, said to be the largest in U.S. history. An Aberdeen couple were also arrested in the bust, dubbed “Operation Raw Deal,” in which nine other countries were also involved, China, Mexico, Canada, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Thailand. With the Grays Harbor County Drug Task Force assisting the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Montesano men, Joshua Allan Springer, 25, and Jeff Carl Thompson, 30, were arrested and booked into the Grays Harbor County Jail, then released “pending further investigation,” said Undersheriff Rick Scott of the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s office.
Building activity continues strong
Building activity in the City of Montesano has cooled slightly but is still going strong. So far this year, the city has issued 21 permits for new single-family homes. That compares to 38 in each of the past two years, and to 17 new homes in 2004. “It’s definitely slowed down a little bit,” Public Works Director Mike Wincewicz said, “but I’m not certain we’re seeing the same trend as nationally. Those permits the last two years were record years for us and I never did think we would sustain that. Thirty-eight new homes is exceptional and to do it two years in a row was amazing … Twenty-one is still a great number for a city like Montesano.”
Trimble to teach math at MHS
A larger-than-budgeted enrollment has made it possible for the Montesano School District to come up with what Superintendent Marti Harruff hopes is a more workable solution to its transportation woes. Harruff has decided to give Tim Trimble the new, half-time math position at the high school and relieve him of his transportation assignment. In his place, the district is advertising for a half-time supervisor for the bus drivers.

Bulldog football falls on the road
BATTLE GROUND – Despite a late Montesano rally, Hockinson made two first half touchdowns enough to knock off the Bulldogs, 14-7, in a non-league football game on Friday, Sept. 21, at Hockinson. The 2A ninth-ranked Hawks (4-0) got on the board early in the first quarter, Hawk quarterback Jody Robertson hit Skyler Linden for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Following an Eric Lucescu extra point the score was 7-0.
Bearcats sweep up Eagles volleyball in three
ELMA – After going step-for-step with Chehalis up to a 10-10 score in the first game, Elma faded and gave way to the serving of Teresa Stoudemire and eventually the Bearcats, 25-19, 25-11, 25-23, in a 2A Evergreen Conference volleyball match on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Elma High School Gym. The match began with perhaps a bit of foreshadowing as Stoudemire aced the first serve of the evening. However, Elma quickly answered back as the Eagles handled Stoudemire's next offering and set up senior Laura Keenan for a spike that glanced off a double block and out of bounds to tie the game. |
