  Monte mayoral campaign heating up
Incumbent Mayor Stone oversaw tree removal more extensive than planned at historic Bryan Park; mayoral candidate Schillinger involved in load of logs gifted illegally to football team fundraiser

Bryan Park at the City of Montesano's east entrance is now bare of the four dozen stately poplars that had become weather beaten and prone to losing limbs or even toppling in high winds. The 80-some year old trees had become a definite liability. But the rhododendrons and other shrubs that lined the entrance are gone now, too, which is something city officials said would not happen. The plan was to remove just the poplars and leave all other landscaping in place until a new plan for the park could be developed.

Mayoral candidate Ron Schillinger has written a letter apologizing to the mayor and City Council for forgetting to tell them about a load of logs that was donated to the Montesano High School football team for a firewood fundraising project. The donation was an illegal gift of a city asset, City Attorney Dan Glenn concluded in a memo to the City Council. On Tuesday, the matter was referred to the council's Forestry Committee. Councilwoman Vini Samuel said the committee will look at the exact amounts involved, both in dollars and tons of wood. Schillinger said that since pulp logs are "barely break-even financially" he didn't think the city was giving away much.
10th annual tour features gardens of East Grays Harbor
  'Earthly Delights' 2007 Garden Tour

All that rain recently could only have helped area gardens become even more lush than they already were, creating an even better setting for the 10th annual Washington State University Master Gardeners Garden Tour on Saturday.

"Earthly Delights" is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and though the midweek weather forecast was calling for clouds Saturday, there was no mention of further wet stuff, and temperatures were expected to be in the 70s. Sounds like a perfect day to stroll through the East Grays Harbor gardens that have been readied for their special day to shine.

John and Rena Thompson's sumptuous English Country Garden, pictured above, in the lush Satsop Valley is one of six that will be featured Saturday in the 10th annual WSU Master Gardeners' Tour, "Earthly Delights." From "Gardening Large in a Small Space" to "Listen to the Land," to a "Fairytale Cottage" and the "Abbott Arboretum" and more, those who stroll through this year's lovely gardens will be tempted to take up permanent residence there. The tour will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Start early and don't take a chance on missing a thing. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw)

Festival goers competitive, but out for fun

Cribbage and watermelon eating contests, rock wall climbing, car show and more...

Some folks come to Montesano's Annual Festival of People for the food, others to get out and mingle, while some others head down to Fleet Park for both of the aforementioned attractions and also to mix it up with other competitive souls in one or more of the Festival's free games, blow-up sports activity stations and the Army Rock Wall Challenge.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, the games got underway with the early rounds of the Cribbage Tournament under the Whitney's covered area, where Charlie McBride and Al Royce slowly worked their way to a finals match-up, where McBride edged Royce for the title.

How much to stop erosion at sewer plant?

The Montesano City Council was shocked Tuesday when it learned it could cost $3 million to protect the wastewater treatment plant from washing into the Wynooche River. The river has migrated nearly 150 feet the last couple of years, most of it this past winter. It has scoured the bank near the treatment plant and sludge pond, prompting the state Department of Ecology to order the city to come up with a plan to protect the plant and to keep the sludge from sluicing into the river. The council is so worried about the long-term implications to both the city's asset and the budget that it recessed the meeting with plans to reconvene again July 25.

Anchor Bank unveils plan for new office
Nine years ago when Anchor Bank was casting about, so to speak, for a location in Montesano, then-president Jim Boora asked Jerry Shaw if he would talk with Chris Pickering at Pick-Rite Thriftway about a possible in-store location. This week, it's with even greater pleasure that Shaw is announcing Anchor Bank's plans to build a $1.3 million, full-service branch at the site of the former Brumfield-Twidwell Ford dealership at Pioneer and Silvia streets - right across from the Fire Department.

New EHS principal comes from Oakville
It might not be that the most important thing about Elma High School's newly hired principal is that he's a distant cousin of country music legend Roy Acuff. But a principal needs many items in his or her educational "toolbox," so who knows it might someday be helpful that Kevin Acuff's famous cousin was a "king" of country music. Until then, he'll just have to rely on his education and his 20 years of experience at the Oakville School District, where he went to work in 1987 as a seventh through 12th-grade special education teacher. After holding that position for seven years, Acuff became the high school's lead teacher.

Fewer folk but just as much fun at Monte festival
It's always the case on Grays Harbor that festival organizers cross their fingers and hope for the best at any event. It's amazing the number of times threatened rain doesn't fall. But that wasn't to be on Saturday for the annual Festival of People in Montesano. There was rain, although not as much as predicted. The event also competed with Aberdeen's Art Walk and other area events. Nevertheless, the 92 cars that came to show at the Historic Montesano Car Show were well received by the folks who turned out. "We consider it a success despite the rain," organizer Dave Foss reports.

Dear MLS: When will you stop tripping over your own feet?

Opinion by Vidette reporter Jerrad Kellogg: The much anticipated arrival of David Beckham to Hollywood and the L.A. Galaxy seemed more like a B-movie than a summertime block-buster. I will say it again. I am trying to embrace soccer, and give it the same respect I give football, baseball, basketball, golf and you could even throw bowling in there if you want. And for the most part I have, but it is hard to, when the most anticipated and watched soccer game on United States soil since the 1994 FIFA World Cup, bills itself as arrival of soccer's savior, David Beckham, and you hardly see him play.

EGH 14s knocked out of state
PASCO Taking place east of the Cascade Mountains the Southern Washington 14-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball State Tournament escaped the flurry of rain showers experienced on the west side of the state last week, but the East Grays Harbor All-Stars were not able to stay for the duration as they went 1-2 in pool play Wednesday, July 18 through Friday, July 20, and then 0-1 in championship play on Saturday, July 21, getting eliminated from the single elimination bracket.

EGH 13s fall at state tourney
TUMWATER The East Grays Harbor All-Stars' stay at the Southern Washington 13-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball State Tournament was shortened due to foul weather forcing the tourney to go from double-elimination to single elimination and a subsequent 5-4 loss to Longview in the first round on Saturday, July 21, at Tumwater.
