The ‘big reveal’

Montesano School Board approves Simpson School plan

By Dee Anne Shaw
Vidette Editor

If planning for the new Simpson School in Montesano were to appear on television, you might see it featured on the home improvement show “Design on a Dime.”
The budget is fixed, costs are rising and yet the challenge is to design a durable, functional, and ultimately beautiful school. The owners, (in this case, the public) insist that there be: No big boxes and no skimping on roofing materials.

The architects obviously have gotten an earful on the widespread dissatisfaction over the fact that the junior/senior high school has a leaky roof and there are major wear-and-tear issues due to cost-saving compromises made during its construction 15 years ago.

Survival at stake as Fire Dist. 5 explores options
District lays off two paramedics in a cost-saving attempt to continue ambulance service.

Trying desperately to keep its ambulance service afloat, Grays Harbor Fire District 5 commissioners explored a number of options at a special meeting last Monday, then voted 2-1 to lay off two of its eight paramedics Feb. 15.

Eric Patton’s “no” vote was outnumbered by the affirmative votes of the district’s two new commissioners, Jerry Bailey and Matt Howarth. Other options included laying off as many as four paramedics. Last October, the district laid off its chief, Randy Coggan, as a cost-saving measure. But at best, acting Chief Brad Peckham said Monday, the district is still losing about $20,000 a month.

2A Evergreen Conference Boys Hoops

ELMA – A blazing first quarter from Centralia left the Tigers sitting on a 14-point lead entering the second period, and from there the visitors kept the home-standing Elma Eagles at arm’s length.

They held on long enough to capture a 2A Evergreen conference boys basketball victory, 72-58, on Friday, Jan. 18, at Elma’s High School Gymnasium.

East Grays Harbor County School Maintenance & Operations levies

Montesano District trying to make up for underfunding in the past
The School District is asking voters to approve a two-year levy for 2009 and 2010 that would raise $1.7 million each year. Ballots for the special election go in the mail Jan. 31 and must be postmarked on or before Feb. 19 in order to be counted. Under a new law, the levy no longer needs a super majority of 60 percent. Just 50 percent plus one vote and it will pass.

About 14% of Ema's budget is from the levy
The Elma School District will ask voters to pass a two-year replacement levy in the special election Feb. 19, to “help bridge the gap between what the state provides and what it actually costs to educate our students,” a school district flier says. The maintenance and operations levy, if passed, would provide $2,312,000 for 2009 and $2,378,623 for 2010.

McC levy would help fund highschoolers
To help provide for student programs and services not fully funded by the state, the McCleary School District will ask voters to approve a two-year replacement levy in the special election Feb. 19. If approved, the maintenance and operations levy will provide the district with $470,000 in 2009 and $525,000 in 2010, with rates of approximately $2.88 per $1,000 of assessed valuation in 2009, or $288 for the owner of a $100,000 home, and $2.93 per $1,000 in 2010, or $293 for a $100,000 home.

Monte students invited to audition for play
Thanks to a grant from the Kelsey Foundation, a traveling troupe of professional young adult actors will come to Montesano to help Monte students become seasoned actors and actresses. The Missoula Children’s Theatre, sponsored by Montesano Community Education with a $4,050 grant from the Kelsey Foundation, will arrive in town the week of Feb. 17-23 with costumes, scenery, props and makeup to transform a cast of recruits to line-perfect performers. Auditions for the production of “The Wiz of the West” will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13. Those auditioning should plan to stay for the full two hours, said Community Education’s Judy Thompson.

Elma girls throttle Chehalis at home, 49-23

ELMA – After one quarter of play, the question was not if Elma was going to win, rather it was if Chehalis was going to score any points? A lock-down defense employed by the Eagles held the Bearcats to no points through nearly 15 minutes of play, meanwhile Elma was knocking down baskets from near and far, building a 25-0 lead that would be more than enough breathing room for the home-standing Eagles to cruise to a, 49-23, 2A Evergreen Conference drubbing of the Bearcats on Jan. 22, at Elma’s High School Gymnasium.

Bulldogs capture Willapa Invite title
RAYMOND – After advancing nine wrestlers into the title round, and winning four of them, Montesano successfully defended its team title at the Willapa Harbor Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Raymond. Montesano amassed 234.5 points, which was good enough to top runner-up Tacoma Baptist at 227.5.
Bulldog champions included Dillon Ford, Ryan Campbell, Ira Alefteras and Matt Combs. Ford topped Tacoma Baptist’s Stephan Talen, 5-0, in the 135-pound final.

Eagle wrestlers pin Centralia, 49-24
ELMA – On the strength of five pins and nine victories Elma rolled over Centralia, 49-24, in a 2A Evergreen Conference wrestling meet on Thursday, Jan. 17, at Elma’s High School Gymnasium. The meet began with the 140-pound match-up and Elma’s Canaan Stenek was able to pin-down Centralia’s Wyatt Churchill in 4:54 to get the Eagles off to a hot start.
