Pat Clemons, the i-dotting, t-crossing retired school teacher who keeps “Monte Pride” alive through her love of the city and its history was named the 2008 Citizen of the Year at the Montesano Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards banquet Saturday, April 19.

Sterling Savings Bank was named Business of the Year while the Montesano School District honored teacher Barb Diaz and school volunteer David Luark.

If there’s any news here it’s that Miss Clemons didn’t win the award years ago. Her role as the caretaker of Montesano’s history has become virtually institutional. She even turned the fact that she’s been nominated for the award three times into a little bit of a history lesson for the crowd of 150-plus who gathered at the Moose Lodge to see her and others lauded for service to their community.
She unfolded her notes saying that she wasn’t sure whether to prepare anything, but she figured she could keep the folks at her table entertained with trivia about the history of the award should she not be invited to the podium. She didn’t know whether it would be “third time’s the charm” or “three strikes and you’re out.”

A trio of singers, consisting of Montesano High School students Lacey Goble, Kathleen Esses, and Laura Hill has performed at more than 10 shows since forming a year ago. The group, which calls itself Triple Threat, joined forces when a different group Hill was a member of disbanded.

Hill’s mother and music instructor, Christine Hill, asked two of her other students, Esses and Goble, to sing at last year’s high school band concert. Since the concert, they have been performing at various locations under the tutelage of Mrs. Hill.

Some favorites of theirs to sing are 'Fields of Gold' by Sting, and 'Queen of Soul,' a medley originally performed by Aretha Franklin, because they’re challenging, Hill said.

Monte locker rooms now supervised after PE

Locker room supervision has been beefed up and “appropriate discipline” has been taken in the wake of an assault that left a Montesano seventh-grader so severely beaten he passed out on the front lawn of his home.

One parent was so upset by the specter of other students doing little to intervene that she attended the Montesano School Board meeting last Thursday to ask how the school and parents can join forces to strengthen the message that bullying and harassment are not allowed.
“I think what really bothered me is the group of kids that stood there and watched,” Dr. Clara Shin told board members. “It really bothers me – that’s group behavior and they’re not thinking independently.”

Satsop’s Goeres killed in car wreck

Wendell “Wendy” Weld of Prosser left Grays Harbor more than 40 years ago. But when he learned by phone Monday that Buford Goeres had died the night before as the result of a vehicle collision not far from Goeres’ Satsop home, Weld hung up the phone and cried.

Goeres, 85, who had touched countless lives, died shortly before midnight at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. His 2002 Ford Crown Victoria had collided just before 4 p.m. with an eastbound 1999 Ford pickup truck driven by Daniel Lindgren, 30, of Aberdeen, who was uninjured. The Washington State Patrol said Goeres had failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of Keys Road and Highway 12.

Lindgren’s passengers, Michelle Lindgren, 29, and Faith Lindgren, 4, were transported privately to Community Hospital in Aberdeen, the child as a precaution and the woman with a facial laceration, the State Patrol said. The three were using proper safety restraints, though Goeres had not been wearing a seat belt, the State Patrol noted.

Elma council pares down EMS rate

Elma’s ambulance availability charge was modified from $11.17 to $6.50 per month for most ratepayers by the Elma City Council at their meeting last Monday. With Harry Henneck absent because of work, the new rate was passed unanimously by the other four council members, amending the previous rate, set in February. After a public hearing April 7 at which a number of residents spoke, some obviously angry, the council reversed itself and voted not to require the citizens to pay back Elma’s portion of the new ambulance availability fee for services that Grays Harbor Fire District 5 provided in 2007 through January 2008, which the city had borrowed from its Ambulance Fund.

Cruisers rally back to nip Eagle baseball at home, 13-10

The Eagles came out the blocks quickly with some big hits to nab the early lead, as starting pitcher Bryndon Ecklund kept the Cruisers scoreless through the first two innings.

Jared Larsen was a double winner for the Bulldogs, taking the 800 meters and 1600 meters.
