Court
summons is first time young woman learns thief has been using
her identity.

Chandra Toy was only 18 last February when a thief snatched her
wallet - and her identity. But though the Aberdeen teen says
she lost no credit cards, the effects of her driver's license
and Social Security card having been stolen have been staggering,
nonetheless, for the young woman who turned 19 in July.
In April, Toy was shocked to receive a summons to Hoquiam Municipal
Court on a charge of third-degree theft. She had reportedly been
arrested for shoplifting at the Hoquiam Swanson's store.
In July, she received another summons, this one to Grays Harbor
Superior Court, which alleged she had driven recklessly to elude
a police officer June 23 near downtown Montesano... |

Chandra Toy displays paperwork summoning her to court. All
of it was the result of crimes committed by an identity thief.

Ron Schillinger:
On top in race for Monte mayor and Marj Johnson: 'Still looking
out for youth' |

Ron Schillinger has emerged as the apparent front-runner in a
three-way race for mayor in Montesano. The retired city forester
captured nearly 59 percent of the vote ahead of the incumbent,
Dick Stone, and a former mayor, Walt Bussard. The unofficial
returns were posted by the Auditor's Office Tuesday night. Stone
was the second-highest vote-getter with about 30 percent, which
secures him a spot heading into the General Election on Nov.

The late Marj Johnson of Montesano, the former military commander
whose charm and friendship softened the edges of her drill-sergeant
expectations while winning the allegiance of an army of volunteers,
has left more than $400,000 to provide college scholarships and
after-school learning opportunities to area youth. |

As in years past at the close of Elma's Outlaw Days festival,
the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Racing Tour will swing by Grays
Harbor Raceway as part of the Big E racing weekend, which features
some high-speed dirt track racing action.
This weekend points races in the Modified, 360 Sprint, Hobby
Stock, Cruiser and Ford focus Midget classes will not be running
on Saturday night as usual. Rather, they give up the track to
the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series and the World of Outlaws.

How to protect yourself from ID theft, what
to do if it happens
Grays Harbor County Prosecutor Stew Menefee says that the main
reason identity theft has become a major problem is because the
United States does not have a "secure identity system."
We can "get a loan or open a bank account based on our Washington
driver's license," Menefee says. "You show your driver's
license to get on an airplane. It was not designed for security
purposes or commercial purposes," he says. "It was
designed for driving."
