VIPs on patrol

Volunteers assist sheriff’s office

By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin

MONTESANO — The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office has a number of VIPs. They are very important persons, but Mitch and Donna Gregoroff of Elma and others are VIPs for other reasons, as well.

They’re Volunteers In Police Work. And they’d like other folks to join them in helping the sheriff’s office with occasional traffic control, security for vendor stands at events, house checks, providing a helpful presence at festivals, office assistance at the courthouse or checking visitors in at the jail.

VIPs even assist other agencies, such as the Red Cross, during disasters, and the group is especially suited to retirees who have some extra time on their hands, the Gregoroffs said.

Some VIPs deliver registered sex offender fliers to the areas where the offenders are living. “Families with kids need to know that,” Mrs. Gregoroff said. They also helped put up posters after 10-year-old Lindsey Baum of McCleary disappeared June 26, 2009.

SCHAFER STATE PARK — Pasta salad, potato salad, corn bread, hamburgers, brats, green pea salad, baked beans, brownies, pie, cookies, sack races, bag tosses, historic displays, banjo band, bird walks and more.
Hundreds packed the park Sunday, July 18, for the potluck dinner and celebration marking the unveiling of the plaque commemorating Schafer State Park’s newly designated status on the National Register of Historic Places.

It was a celebration that just a few years ago many were worried might not take place. Schafer and Lake Sylvia state parks were on the short list for possible closure due to budget cuts. Then, more than 10,000 signatures were sent to the state legislature urging lawmakers to keep the parks open.

ELMA — After hanging with the lead pack early on, Jason Johnson of Eunice, La., inched his way to the front where he collected the victory in an American Sprint Car Series national points race that doubled as the first main event of the fourth annual Fred Brownfield Memorial on Friday, July 16, at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.

Also hitting the track Friday was a group of late model drivers. Casey Vitale of Albany, Ore., wound up emerging from that field to grab the main event win.

Elma: Pay up or else
ELMA — Elma City Council members passed a resolution at their meeting Monday not only to recoup money the city would have received for utility fees it mistakenly didn’t bill for, but also to charge the missed customers 3 percent interest on their balances.

Out of about 1,500 accounts, 16 utility customers haven’t been getting billed for some fees, including, in one case, sewer service for a six-unit complex since it was built some 20 years ago, according to Mayor Dave Osgood.

A day at the races
Last week, Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma was a whirlwind of activity. Racing action began Thursday evening with a special wingless sprint class visit. Friday and Saturday nights played host to the fourth annual Fred Brownfield Memorial sprint car races.

Rough-and-tumble racing slows Saturday’s action
ELMA — It was a late night of racing on Saturday’s bookend to the fourth annual Fred Brownfield Memorial on Saturday. Numerous wrecks had track and safety crews busy, including a trio of substantial crashes that required medical attention for the drivers. When the commotion calmed, it was Louisiana’s Jason Johnson who took the checkers in the American Sprint Car Series feature — Johnson’s second memorial main event win in as many nights. His weekend efforts earned him more than $13,000 in prize money, $10,092 for Saturday’s race alone.

Texas driver Rilat nabs wingless sprint victory Thursday
ELMA — One pass.

That was all Travis Rilat of Forney, Texas, needed to take over the top spot and cruise to the checkers in the Northwest Wingless Sprint Tour main event that kicked off three nights of racing action Thursday, July 15, at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.

Also on hand for Thursday was a contingent of Open Midget drivers who had a rough night and their feature trimmed from 25 to just 10-laps.

When the dust settled, Tacoma’s Evan Margeson was in front of the ones left standing, earning him the win.

Monte’s Sanders competes in China
Incoming Montesano senior Mackenzie Sanders did not have the typical summer vacation by any means.

Sanders recently completed a trip to China and Hong Kong through the Washington Cultural Exchange program, where she and 15 others in her delegation competed July 10-11, in the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association International Track and Field Meet. The meet included 38 teams from from China, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, United States and Vietnam.
