Election '07 draws dozens
Mayoral candidates offer views, trade barbs

By Dee Anne Shaw

Is the incumbent mayor of Montesano, Dick Stone, really a liar like his challenger says?

Is the challenger, Ron Schillinger, disingenuous, misinformed or both — like the mayor says? Is the City of Montesano in the worst financial shape of the past two decades?

Or is it in better shape than it was 10 years ago? These assertions and others were aired Monday during a candidate forum that drew more than 70 people — and kept them in their seats upstairs at Montesano City Hall for nearly two hours.

The Montesano High School Class of 1942 met for its 65th reunion on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the home of a classmate in Aberdeen. Not pictured is Audrey Dominoski, the classmate who offered to host the event.

Pictured in the front row, from left, are Wanda (Birdwell) Woodsie, Eileen (Kerr) Alwood and Marjorie (Smith) Gatzmyer. In the back row are Don Crisp, Don McPherson, Bob Nelson, Jerry Zeman and Hubert Brumfield. Two other class members joined the group later in the day and aren’t pictured — Gene Murphy and Darwin Crites. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw)

Unfortunately, Mrs. Dominoski was not able to attend due to health reasons, but graciously encouraged her classmates to continue without her. She has since been released from the hospital and is now living at Westhaven Villa in Aberdeen.

By the end of the turnover ridden first half, Montesano was able to put the first points on the scoreboard, setting the stage for the Bulldogs to take control in the second half and notch their first 1A Evergreen League shut-out football victory over Toledo, 20-0, on Friday, Sept. 14, at Rottle Field.

McCleary and Elma school boundaries redrawn

The boundaries of the Elma and McCleary school districts are being redrawn and a state panel has granted the petition of parents to transfer a growing area currently in the Elma School District to the McCleary School District next year. The former prairie has grown considerably in recent years and as more families with young children have moved in to the new housing developments their parents petitioned to become part of the McCleary district, which is much closer.

Enrollment down at Elma
District doesn’t divulge numbers, but freezes school budgets. A “considerable” drop in student enrollment in the Elma School District has prompted the School Board to freeze “building budgets” to 40 percent until January.
Though she said she didn’t yet have exact figures for the School Board at its meeting Sept. 12, Elma School District’s business manager, Lisa Arnold, said, “We would like to freeze building budgets to 40 percent ‘till January,” when enrollment will be again looked at.

Couple found dead in motel in Montesano
Star Lutes, 44, and Sara Brisebois, 25, were found dead at the Plum Tree Motel about 11 or so Saturday by a man who came over to visit Lutes. The couple’s children told him they had been unable to wake them and that they were still sleeping. The cause of death for a couple found dead in a motel room in Montesano on Saturday likely hinges on results of toxicology reports, police say. A drug overdose is suspected. There were no signs of violence, but there is evidence of drug abuse, Police Chief Ray Sowers said. Sowers said the couple had been staying there for about a month and the children, a girl age 10 who is the daughter of the male victim, and a boy age 5 who is the son of the female victim, were enrolled in Montesano schools about a week ago.

Communication a key issue in Monte School Board races
If there was one thing communicated Monday about the Montesano School District it’s that the district’s budget and spending priorities are poorly communicated to the public. Controversy over budget cuts due to declining enrollment make that clear, three of the candidates seeking election to the board said at a forum Monday.
But aside from that, the candidates offered universal praise about the quality of education students who attend Montesano schools receive. The forum drew more than 70 people at one point. The three school board candidates included Hillary Poler, an incumbent who is not opposed for election to her first full term; Brian Hornback, who is running against incumbent Rich Hartman, and Dr. Mike Lawr who is running against incumbent Kim Lillegard.

Monte activist files elections complaint against Stone
The state Public Disclosure Commission is investigating an allegation that Montesano Mayor Dick Stone has illegally used city resources and the City Council’s time in his bid for re-election. In a complaint filed Aug. 28 by Jay Sterling of Montesano, a land-use watchdog who currently has several actions pending against the city, Sterling alleges that the mayor used “public facilities to prepare and deliver a special one-hour presentation to the Montesano City Council to refute a campaign issue” raised by his opponent, retired city forester Ron Schillinger.
