The Elma Eagles rally strong after disastrous storm and flooding in time to help put food on holiday tables

For the first time in five years the Food Bowl trophy will reside in Elma High School’s trophy case.
However, this time, the transfer of the golden award was not based on food or money totals, rather a gesture by Montesano High School for a job well done despite difficult challenges faced by both sides.

As the annual food drive competition was in its infancy earlier this month a brutal winter storm ripped through the area — knocking out power to thousands of Grays Harbor residents — making continuous collection efforts somewhat of a dangerous proposition.Instead of putting students in danger, administrators at Montesano advanced an idea of a cooperative effort for this year, and Elma agreed.
“Given the conditions in our community, the coming together of the two schools to be cooperative in their efforts was the appropriate approach,” Bob Corley, MHS principal, said.

A huge gust accompanied by the scream of ripping metal told Ed Mustard the historic barn was giving way.

A landmark barn dating to 1912, and once the tallest in the valley hereabouts will soon be history after the hurricane-force winds of Dec. 3 sheared off the west side.
The barn at the Mustards’ is visible from Highway 12 in both directions, but since the storm the view is a gaping black hole; hardly the picturesque rural view motorists are accustomed to.

The barn on the acreage owned by Ed Mustard at Brady took a beating during the windstorm of Dec. 2-3 and is likely a total loss. Luckily, the three draft horses inside were not injured. The barn dates to 1912, and at one time was the biggest in the valley, family members say. It has long been part of the rural landscape visible to motorists from Highway 12. (Photos by Dee Anne Shaw)
It’s usually the high water table and periodic flooding that plague the farmers and residents along the Brady Loop Road. In addition to the barn’s roof, the wind ripped huge limbs off an old, shady maple tree in the front yard. Ed Mustard and everyone in his family know exactly which gust took out the barn, exposing the hand-hewn support timbers.

Two-day clam dig approved for the holiday weekend
Now there’s even more reason to celebrate living on the coast this holiday season. A two-day razor clam dig has been approved for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 21 and Dec. 22, on evening tides at four beaches — Twin Harbors, Long Beach, Copalis and Mocrocks.
One beach, Twin Harbors, will also be open for an evening razor clam dig on Sunday, Dec. 23. “These digs during the holiday season are enormously popular,” Dan Ayres, Fish & Wildlife’s coastal shellfish manager based in Montesano, said in a news release. In 2003, which is the last time the tides were conducive to a razor-clam dig during the week of Christmas, nearly 20,000 diggers hit the beach the first day, he said.

Her birthday cake, which was a full sheet, half chocolate and half white, featured a large picture of Mrs. LaBrot.
