A home-grown champ
He hopes to add to crop of awards

By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin
Vidette Reporter

The summer between the eighth and ninth grade, Miles Zepp joined FFA. That was the youngest he could become a member of the agricultural organization — and since then the lifelong Elma resident has never looked back. Winning numerous competitions at the district and state levels, in a few days, Zepp will be participating in national competitions.

You could say Zepp is a chip off the old block. “My dad was in FFA and my older brother was really involved in it at the time,” he says. He also liked the way the advisors directed it, and “I thought it would be a fun program to be involved in.”

The Vidette captured a “General Excellence” award in the annual Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.
In addition, four members of the staff —Gloria Kilwien, Debi Meredith, Reed McQuaid and Dee Anne Shaw — captured individual awards for excellence bringing to 13 the total number of awards presented to The Vidette at the annual banquet earlier this month in Yakima.

Among weekly newspapers, a “General Excellence” award is equivalent to bringing home a team trophy from a state tournament.

Montesano’s second half rally forces
overtime, but Winlock/Toledo prevails, 4-3

By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter

A quick 3-1 lead put the Winlock/Toledo combined team in a position to fend off Montesano’s two-goal second-half rally and force overtime. Then in overtime, Winlock/Toledo converted in the third minute of the extra period to boost W/T United to a, 4-3, 1A Evergreen League victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Rottle Field.

Two candidates for Elma School Board vying for position

Ballots for the Nov. 6 General Election in Grays Harbor County were mailed Oct. 17, according to the Auditor’s Office. To be counted, ballots must be returned to the Auditor’s Office by 8 p.m. Nov. 6 or postmarked that day. A drop box will be available at the Auditor’s Office that day, as well. In Elma, there are races for mayor, city council and school board positions. A Fire District 5 commissioner will also be elected, as well as a commissioner in Hospital District 1, which includes the Elma area.

Elections complaint dismissed; mayor did not break election law, PDC says
The state Public Disclosure Commission has dismissed allegations that Montesano Mayor Dick Stone illegally used public facilities in his campaign for re-election.Vickie Rippe, the agency’s director, said “no evidence was found” that the law was violated Aug. 14 when Stone presented a memo to the City Council saying that he wanted to set the record straight about the city’s water department reserves and council policy on how it can be spent. “After a careful review of the alleged violations and relevant facts, we have concluded our investigation and, with the concurrence of the Chair of the Public Disclosure Commission, I am dismissing James Sterling’s complaint against you,” she wrote in a three-page letter outlining the agency’s “findings of fact.”

Annual Farm Tour delights agriculture enthusiasts
The cold, wet weather did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the nearly 130 people who boarded buses Saturday, Oct. 6, for the annual Harvest Celebration & Farm Tour. Equipped with warm clothing and umbrellas, the crowd listened on the way to a very eastern part the county, between Porter and Oakville, as WSU Extension agent, Don Tapio gave a running account of agriculture “then and now” in East Grays Harbor. Tapio used information garnered by a new face in this year’s tour, Sylvia Dickerson of Aberdeen. Dickerson and her husband, Michael, transplants from California last year, were instrumental in helping organize the tour.

ELMA – With 2:20 left in the match, Black Hills senior Kathleen McGee headed in teammate’s Lexy Fancher’s free kick from 25-yards out to close out the scoring and give the Wolves the edge they needed to top Elma, 6-5, in a 2A Evergreen Conference girls soccer match up on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Davis Field.
