Evan's life is a dream come true
Until recently, his medical problems necessitated having nurses at his home many hours each day - and night.

What kid hasn't wished to go to Disneyland? For 3-year-old Evan Gentry of Montesano it's more than a wish - the Make-A-Wish Foundation is making it a dream come true.
Thanks to the organization that specializes in granting wishes of seriously ill children, Evan's taking his mom, 5-year-old sister and grandparents with him May 20-24 when he visits that fairytale place of fantastic adventures, Mickey Mouse and Tomorrowland.

When he was born July 24, 2003, at Tacoma General Hospital, no one knew if Evan had many tomorrows. But though he still struggles with a myriad of medical problems from a mysterious chromosomal defect, the tyke's becoming a pro at beating the odds.

It was a very special Mother's Day weekend for Evan and his mom Breanna Gentry as family and friends gathered for a party on Saturday at their home in the Wynooche Valley. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw)
  Satsop Grange turns100
Everyone is invited to celebrate from
1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Grange.

When the Satsop Grange, thought to be the oldest continuous Grange in Grays Harbor County, was incorporated in December 1907, no one had ever heard of a "world war."

The Roaring 20s were still in the misty future, and the Model T wouldn't be hitting the road for another year- though Henry Ford, a farmer's son, would introduce a prototype of the tractor, the "automobile plow," about the time Satsop Grange No. 183 was born.

The Grange's current master, Shirley Dahl, tells about the organization in preparation for its centennial celebration Sunday. Dahl doesn't just run the meetings, as attested to by the dust mop behind her that she was using just before this photo was taken. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw)

Monte bus garage absorbs budget cuts
Fumes are nothing new where buses gather, but in the Montesano School District it's the drivers who are fuming over news that their boss, Roger Garrick, is the latest to fall victim to the budget-cutting ax. Most members of the transportation department got together Tuesday night to gather their thoughts into a letter they submitted to The Vidette on Wednesday morning. The drivers say they want the public to know they have serious doubts about Superintendent Marti Harruff's assurances that she is coming up with an alternative to maintain the district's aging fleet that doesn't jeopardize student safety.

A 'souper' deal
Farrol Pavola and Louanne Sorensen, both of Montesano, are among those who have been enjoying "Souper Thursdays" upstairs at Montesano City Hall. The casual and simple weekly soup and bread lunches are a chance for folks to socialize and find out what's going on around town in the way of events and day trips. All are invited to stop by for lunch at noon on Thursdays. Your $1 donation buys buttered bread and a bottomless bowl of homemade soup. After lunch, there's cribbage, pinochle or other board games available for anyone who wants to stay and play. Or not.
