If you noticed a gaggle of teens wearing robes this weekend, it wasn’t a Harry Potter convention, it was the graduating classes of 2010.

WENATCHEE — The Washington State Firefighters Association honored two Grays Harbor Fire District 2 volunteers June 12 at its annual Fire School Banquet in Wenatchee.
Brad Shumate, a volunteer at the Brady station, was named the 2009 Emergency Medical Services Responder of the Year.

Sunny skies help bring out young anglers to Lake Sylvia
By Jerrad Kellogg

MONTESANO — For the first time in three years, tarps and umbrellas were not part of the standard tackle box accessories for patrons of the annual Moose Lodge Kids Fishing Derby.
Instead, under clear skies, sunglasses and shorts seemed to fit the bill — as record numbers of the area’s youth flocked to Montesano’s Lake Sylvia to try their hand at landing the big one on Saturday, June 12. |

Six-year-old Joel Nelson of Aberdeen anxiously looks on as a Moose Lodge Kids Fishing Derby official weighs-in his division winning fish. Nelson’s haul, a 5-pound, 3-ounce trout was the largest fish caught during the day.
“This was a great turnout,” co-coordinator Steve Tupper said. “I think the weather helped to bring everyone out.” With temperatures hovering near 70 degrees, nearly 350 entries dropped lines into the water hoping to pull out a winning lunker and collect a prize. In a bit of a change from previous derbies, there was no contest for the largest overall fish. Rather, the top-three fish in each of the four age groups netted “grand prizes,” while 50 smaller tagged fish brought with them a special prize giveaway.
