Wynooche bell called kids to class for years
By Dee Anne Shaw
Vidette Editor
A bell that was lovingly restored more than 30 years ago by a man with fond memories of his school days in the Wynooche Valley will be back on the job when Montesano’s new $14 million Simpson School opens in 2009
It’s too soon to say if the school grounds will reverberate with the sound of the bell calling students to class or hold a place of honor on display. Either way, the goal is to bring history alive for today’s high-tech kids.

Brett Vance of the Simpson School Design Team and Alletia Simons of the Wynooche Grange inspect the commemorative photo and plaque on the wall beside the lighted nook that holds the Wynooche Bell. A Polaroid photo from 1976 that they are inspecting shows Neva Orr, whose barn the bell was found in, and Alletia and Bob Simons. It was Mr. Simons who made the bell his personal history project, using it to keep memories of the old school alive. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw)
The bell has occupied a lighted nook of honor at the Wynooche Grange since 1976 when the late Robert Simons restored it as a bicentennial project. And now, the Grange is donating it to the Montesano School District.

State 1A Football Championships First Round: Orting Vs. Montesano
By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter
TUMWATER – In a game marred by turnovers, Orting’s Cardinals threw away the opening round Class 1A State Football Playoff contest before Montesano’s Bulldogs were able to fumble it away on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Tumwater.
Montesano ended up winning, 28-20, but only after some late dramatics.
Leading 28-14 and taking over on downs at midfield with 8:40 left to go, Montesano looked to run out the clock.

But a Bulldog fumble two minutes later instigated a three-play Cardinal touchdown drive that made it 28-20. On the ensuing Montesano possession another fumble – this one deep in Monte territory – set Orting up with the ball on the 32-yard line with 4:10 showing on the clock.
