Treasure comes home to architect's grandson
By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin
Vidette Reporter
Though it took many years, maybe even a century, a piece of Grays Harbor history recently traveled home. No one knows how long it was gone, but the grandson of a pioneer Harbor architect, much of whose work is still a solid part of the area, was delighted to get it — though he didn’t keep it. Here’s what is known:
George B. Reid, who designed the “first brick church in East Grays Harbor” — St. John’s in Montesano — planned his buildings to last. The Gothic-style structure was built of dark brown brick, with “trimmings of poured stone,” according to a story on the church’s dedication in the April 13, 1923, issue of The Vidette.

An Aberdeen woman who is among the top-ranking officials in the state Department of Health will become Grays Harbor’s new director of public health and social services on Nov. 1.
Joan Brewster, 55, was offered the job earlier this week by the county commissioners who say she emerged as the clear front runner in the national search they conducted to replace Maryann Welch, who is retiring Oct. 31 after more than 20 years in public health and management for the county |

Quick reflexes lead to 3-0 win
By Jerrad Kellogg

It took only five minutes for Montesano to score what they needed to secure their first 1A Evergreen match-up of 2007. An early Mikayla Shumate goal put the Bulldogs up 1-0, and the home team tacked on two more goals later in the contest – including another from Shumate – to win their home opener, 3-0, over the combine from Onalaska-Napavine known as RockOn on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Rottle Field. |

Subdivision approved east of Montesano
A 31-lot subdivision on Camp Creek Road east of Montesano at Roup Road was approved Monday by the County Commissioners. Curt Crites, a planner for the county, said the commissioners’ vote means that the developer, Mark Studer, can proceed but must still meet all the conditions set out in the planning documents. The 19-acre development proposal came to the commissioners with a unanimous recommendation from the Planning Commission.
Enrollment up in Montesano
A summer of layoffs, cutbacks and controversy while the Montesano School District prepared for the possibility of lower enrollment is ending on a high note. The district budgeted low, cut deep and hoped for more kids because more students means money from the state. In September of last year there were 658 full-time students at the junior/senior high school compared to the 667 full-time enrollment this fall.

Eagles hold off Spartans for 38-28 victory
ELMA – For the second time in as many weeks, Elma owned a sizeable lead entering the third quarter and watched it shrink to the point where their opponent was within striking distance of the lead late in the game.
This time however the Eagles (1-1 overall) got the last laugh on a furious four-turnover exchange in the fourth period and capped it off with an eight-yard Brennan Baker touchdown run with 23 seconds left to cement the 38-28 Elma football victory over Class 1A Forks on Friday, Sept. 7, at Davis Field.
Rescheduled Brownfield Memorial set for this weekend
ELMA – The Northwest Sprint Challenge Series and the Ford Focus Midget cars are slated to return to Grays Harbor Raceway this Friday and Saturday nights for the Fred Brownfield Memorial, which was originally scheduled for July 20-21, but was cancelled due to rain. As originally planned a full field of sprint cars will be gunning for Saturday’s top prize of $10,092, which is not a normal prize amount, but the extra $92 on top of the $10,000 prize is significant because it was the number Brownfield raced under – 92. |
