Gearing up
for Festival of People |

Headlining
this year's festival is the 5th annual Historic Montesano Antique
Car Show with about 180 cars expected.

Montesano's Festival of People got a tune-up this year, and more
cars, more games and more fun all-around are expected for the
day-long event next Saturday, July 21.
Lori Benedict of Montesano is this year's chairman. She answered
the call for help put out by the few frazzled folks who have
been putting the festival on in previous years. She says everything
is coming together nicely.
The Festival of People is sponsored by the Montesano Chamber
of Commerce and the city. It's intended to be an old-fashioned,
ice-cream-social kind of day where folks just hang out and have
fun. |

Teri Daneker of Montesano is all smiles as she sits in the
driver's seat of her bright red 1961 Chevy Impala convertible.
She's owned it for nine years now, and says her husband Lynn
bought it for her as a surprise instead of the car she thought
she wanted, and now she won't trade it for anything. That's Lynn
Daneker looking on, standing by his favorite street rod, a 1930
Chevy Roadster. He knows of only one other on Grays Harbor, but
it's a classic. Look for the Danekers at the 5th Annual Historic
Montesano Antique Car Show next Saturday, July 21. (Photo

Fred Keel is
grand marshal of 2007's Bear Festival Parade |

Parade is July
14, twelve noon
By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin

For years, Fred Keel of McCleary has faithfully served his family,
his employer, his town and his country. For those reasons and
more, Keel's been named grand marshal of this year's Bear Festival
Parade.
Preferring to work out of the limelight, he's a little "embearassed"
about it.
When the parade gets under way at noon Saturday; though, look
for the classy black Mustang convertible following the fire and
police entries, and you'll spot a smiling, waving man who retired
last year after 25 years with the McCleary Fire Department -
the final decade as its chief. |

fire chief, stands in his sunny backyard Monday. Few residents
of his town don't know Keel or why he would be honored as this
year's grand marshal of the Bear Festival Parade, which gets
under way at noon Saturday. Watch for Keel in a classy black
Mustang convertible. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw) |

Monte drops next two games, EGH eliminated
in next round
By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter
Three big innings, in which Monte scored at least five runs,
helped propel the Montesano Little League All-Stars past the
East Grays Harbor All-Stars, 18-4, during the first round of
the District III Major League Tournament at Nelson Field on Saturday,
July, 7.
The pace for this game was established early and looked as if
it was going to be a shootout, as Monte tallied five runs in
the top of the inning and then EGH responded with two runs of
their own.

Longtime Elma teacher resigns over conflict
Tim Schneider, who taught the forestry and aquaculture
programs and a wildlife class during his 18 years at Elma High
School, has become the latest member of the staff to resign amidst
turmoil so deep a consultant has called the school "strategically
dysfunctional." "The events that occurred with my program
drove me away from this district," Schneider wrote in his
letter of resignation. Schneider has accepted a teaching position
at the Mary M. Knight School District.
Clerk hired at City of Montesano
The City Council unanimously approved the hiring of Linda Wolverton
of Copalis Beach at its meeting Tuesday night. The previous longtime
clerk controller, Sharon Morgan, retired Oct. 31. One of five
candidates for the position, Wolverton, is a certified public
accountant. Originally from Spokane, she worked for 17 years
in the Spokane County Treasurer's Office, "including being
the supervisor of that office, and she was also, for four years,
the elected treasurer of Spokane County," Mayor Dick Stone
said Wednesday morning.
Montesano School Board gearing up to adopt
2007-08 budget
A 2007-08 budget featuring cuts of at least $292,000 will be
presented to the Montesano School Board at a budget workshop
meeting set for 6 p.m. Thursday, July 19. This will be the first
official unveiling of a proposed budget that implements layoffs
and other cuts. Superintendent Marti Harruff said she is planning
for 83 fewer students next year. District officials are scrambling
to meet the deadline for the public hearing and Harruff said
she doesn't know if a draft budget will be available beforehand,
but noted everyone is grateful that the finance director, Bev
Goble, is back at work after a serious illness. The school board
is scheduled to go into a regular meeting at 7 p.m. and could
possibly adopt the budget the same night.
Accident rate highest among east county roads
It's not the weather or the potholes that give the Ocean Beach
Road and the Monte-Elma Road the dubious honor of being the top
two roads to feature car wrecks on Grays Harbor last year. Both
are straight stretches that tempt drives to go dangerously fast
with disastrous consequences. "Just speed and driver error,"
Paul Easter, the county's public services director, noted in
presenting the 2006 Annual Traffic Accident Report to the county
commissioners this week.
