After a presentation Feb. 4 on a market analysis for planning a new Mark Reed Hospital, in which the firm performing the study recommends building it in Elma, McCleary Mayor Gary Dent had a question — for the audience:
“Do you want me and my colleagues at city hall to fight this or support it?” Dent asked the 55-60 community members gathered at the McCleary Community Center.
“Yes, yes, fight, fight it … fight it” shot back a number of disgruntled folks.

Renée Dunham, Mark Reed’s chief executive officer, suggested it would be better to get answers to any questions they had first.Later, Dent told Dunham the City of McCleary would be monitoring “very carefully” a loan application to the U.S. Department of Agriculture the district hopes to submit this summer and could raise objections if there are concerns.
It was the second town hall meeting on the subject. About 20 community members met Feb. 3 at the Elma High School library for the same presentation by Marc Sauvé, senior healthcare strategist with Nashville-based Gresham, Smith and Partners.

Man proposes via coffee stand menu

ELMA —
Everyone knows marriage proposals should be special. But Brian Bartholomew of Elma made his to April Wright, also of Elma, one that lots of folks won’t soon forget.
Knowing Wright stopped most every day for an Americana at Elma’s Coffee Coop on her way to work as a para-educator at McCleary School, Bartholomew arranged with the espresso stand’s owner, Renée Bush, to post his request Nov. 20 on the reader board.

Bartholomew, who works for Crown Distributing out of Centralia, is good at making arrangements. To be sure Wright didn’t decide for some reason not to stop for coffee that morning, he had Wright’s co-worker call and ask her to pick up a drink for her, as well.

When Bartholomew then verbalized his proposal through her car window, Wright said, “yes.”

“I was very surprised; I didn’t expect it at all,” Wright said. Then she had a question for her new fiancé — did her co-worker still want her coffee? His answer was “no.”

Lotsa love, little money

MONTESANO — There’s no money, but there’s a plan for the future at Lake Sylvia and Schafer state parks.
State Parks staff presented a draft plan for the parks Thursday, Jan. 28, to nearly 50 folks gathered at city hall.
“We have no funding, but we have a lot of love, and I think that will help us get through this,” state parks region planner Mike Hankinson said.
Comments on the plan are due Feb. 11. Plan copies are available online at www.parks.wa.gov/plans/lksylvia-schafer.

Dustin McCombs started his truck, which was parked near the Masco service station on Highway 12 in Elma, then drove his car to Toad’s Express Mart about three blocks away on Third Street to get something to eat, Elma’s assistant fire chief, Dave Spalding, said.
But returning to the truck, McCombs found the cab on fire, Spalding said, adding that McCombs used a fire extinguisher but “couldn’t knock it down, so he called the fire department real quick.”
