Museum of the North Beach acquires documents from Grays Harbor’s infancy

Trader’s ledgers from 1800s surface

In an amazing chain of events liberally laced with serendipity, 19 treasures that originated in the Montesano area in the 1870s and had somehow made their way to Boise, Idaho, have come home to Grays Harbor.
Ledgers of various sizes, the earliest of which date from an Indian trading post started by John Esmond in 1871 in a shack on the bank of the Chehalis River in what is now “South Montesano,” have been acquired by the Museum of the North Beach at Moclips.

Incredibly, though the ledgers are from a pioneer Montesano business, entries include names that would become prominent all over the county. For example, besides C.N. Byles, the “father of Montesano,” the ledgers record purchases by Aberdeen founder “Sam’l Benn,” J.M. Weatherwax and “Alex” Young, for whom two Aberdeen schools are named; A.O. Damon, who once owned the land where Ocean Shores is today; folks named Markham and others from “Quinaielt.”

Life-saving rescue of PUD worker earns Scott, Pimentel accolades from county
A simple thank you doesn't seem to capture the gratitude we feel

Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott and Chief Criminal Deputy Dave Pimentel were presented with the county’s Meritorious Service Medal on Monday for the role they played helping to save the life of a PUD lineman during the storm of Dec. 2-3.
“Scott Daniels is recovering at home thanks to the heroic actions of individuals who risked their own safety for the life of another on that terrible night,” Rick Lovely, the general manager of the PUD, told the commissioners, reading from a letter in support of the service medals.

“They performed beyond the call of duty. A simple thank you doesn’t seem to capture the gratitude we feel for the work they did in the middle of a disaster.”
Two PUD workers were seriously injured when the storm worsened the night of Dec. 2 and a falling tree struck the bucket truck they were working in. Daniels’ injuries were so severe it was determined he would probably die unless he reached Harborview Medical Center at Seattle, which is the only trauma center in the state with the equipment that was needed to stabilize him for surgery, Lovely said.

After three closely contested quarters, Montesano trailed by three points heading into the final period of play and Bulldog senior Bryson Ford emerged to lead Monte on a late run that helped seal a, 53-48, non-league boys basketball victory on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Bo Griffith Memorial Gymnasium.

Commissioner Bob Beerbower announces he won’t seek reelection

Bob Beerbower, the county commissioner from Elma for the past 12 years, has decided not to seek re-election. Beerbower, 65, announced Wednesday that after “much careful thought” he has decided it is time to let someone else represent the east county area. “This was not an easy decision for me,” he wrote in a letter announcing his decision, “but I feel it is the right decision at the right time."

County e-mails taint appearance of fairness
Loose lips can sink ships, so they say, but it’s a quickly typed, unkind remark about developer Ken Brogan of Tumwater that finds Grays Harbor County Commissioner Al Carter on the hot seat. Carter was forced to “recuse” himself from a hearing Monday on whether to allow a four-lot subdivision on a 23-acre parcel along the Elma-Hicklin Road near McCleary. The property is zoned GD-5, meaning general development/five-acre lots. The proposal is one of several that Brogan and a partner, Garry Anensen, have before the county right now.
