  Nothing 'sheepish' at this Fair
New fun fair events - and 'old faves' - 'growin' on

By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin

The weather forecast might be calling for some clouds this week, but the 2007 Grays Harbor County Fair, which opened Wednesday and runs through Sunday, is the place to be - whether the sun is shining or not. Along with oodles of the usual "fair fare," there's going to be a host of new offerings, according to Debbie Adolphsen, the fair's manager for the sixth year.

"I was just in awe last night as I was going home and looking at all the work that had been done yesterday," Adolphsen said Monday. "And the creativity and just the passion (everyone) put into it just amazes me every year."

To wit: Goat Mountain, designed and built by Jim Borden of Satsop, Jack Prince, former owner of Bayview Redi-Mix on the Harbor, Scott Martin, a landscape designer, is "a chance for people to observe goats at play, just kind of doing their thing," Adolphsen said. "They're not under the stress of showing or being on exhibit," she said, but are in "kind of a more natural habitat," But the exhibit, just below the Grays Harbor Raceway, isn't what the average fairgoer might expect. Using a drum from a Redi-Mix truck, it's made to look like a plane crash, and visitors will see the goats "playing inside it and on top of it," Adolphsen said. Additionally, "they have their own picnic table and wishing well."
Church picks Wisdom as youth pastor

A leader of young people needs wisdom. And a Montesano native just might have put a Central Park congregation ahead of others in that category.

In July, lifelong Montesano resident Kyle Wisdom, 22, became Christian Life Fellowship's new youth pastor. Forty-six young people showed up for the next Wednesday evening service.

But according to the church's interim pastor, Rick Moyer, Wisdom was a great choice for the position for reasons other than his last name. Moyer remembers the first time Wisdom showed up in 2003.

NASCAR great Geoff Bodine swings through Montesano

One of the 50 Greatest Drivers in NASCAR history

By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter

Geoff Bodine, 1982's NASCAR Rookie of the Year, and 1986 Daytona 500 champion, has had plenty of success on the track tallying 18 stock car wins and 190 top-10 finishes, over his 26-year career. But even now the accomplished racecar driver's life has barely slowed down.

Bodine, away from his North Carolina home, was in the midst of a whirlwind swing through the Northwest last week.

Fine issued for stormwater permit

The developer of the Swiss Meadows housing development in Montesano has been fined $14,000 by the state Department of Ecology for allegedly failing to obtain required permits to control stormwater runoff. The fine was made public Monday in a news release from the agency. The developer, John Backman of Olympia, said in a telephone interview that he thought he was trying to work with Ecology and that the news release and fine came as a surprise. Other than that, he declined comment until after he had a chance to speak with his attorney and decide how to proceed.

Candidates' forum planned for Sept. 17
The Montesano Chamber of Commerce and The Vidette are co-sponsoring a two-hour candidate forum planned for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, upstairs at Montesano City Hall.
Paul Easter of Montesano - who as a former county assessor and currently the county's public services director is no stranger to navigating political waters - has agreed to moderate. The first hour or so will be devoted to school-related issues with questions directed to candidates seeking election to the School Board; the second half of the forum to mayoral and city council candidates seeking election in Montesano.

Development moratorium in McCleary extended
The Grays Harbor County Commissioners, with the blessing of the City of McCleary, have extended a development moratorium in the Wildcat Creek aquifer area another six months. The aquifer supplies McCleary's drinking water and there has been concern that growth in the unincorporated area might impact water quality.

Did you see that skateboarder wipe-out at the X-Games?

Opinion by Vidette reporter Jerrad Kellogg: Something scary happened at ESPN's X-Games. It made the local news, it was talked about all over television and moments after it happened clips of it were circling the Internet. Not necessarily your normal coverage of an alternative sport, but what unfolded on Thursday, Aug. 2, at the X-Games can only be described as a miracle.

Cole nabs first Sprint win of season
ELMA Shelton's Jay Cole the defending 360 Sprint Class champion tallied his first win of the 2007 season as he took over the lead halfway through the feature event and ran away with the victory from there on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.

Waterfowl hunting seasons set for 2007
ANACORTES Duck and goose hunters will enjoy seasons similar to last year's under a package adopted by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission at a recent meeting in Anacortes on Aug. 3-4. The commission, which sets policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, approved hunting seasons based on state and federal estimates of waterfowl populations.
