McCLEARY — More than 400 parents, community members and others dropped by McCleary School last week to celebrate the school district’s 100-year anniversary. They were also there to check out the building after an extensive modernization and new construction project was largely completed by the start of school Sept. 8. |

And it was far more than simply a paint job. “Basically, we’ve gutted the place and started over,” Superintendent/Principal Dan Bolender said, as he and his wife, Kris, grilled hamburgers Thursday, Oct. 1, for the celebration.
The modernization project was virtually ongoing all last school year.

MONTESANO — Threatening the course record and topping the nearest competition by a minute-and-a-half, Elma junior Todd Jackson easily took first place in the boys race at the well-attended Montesano Cross Country Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Lake Sylvia.

With nearly 200 runners in attendance for the high school races, and close to 120 in the boys race, Jackson had lots of competition out there. However, the junior clocked in at a blazing 15:42, which is the best time in recent memory on the 3.1 mile course winding through Lake Sylvia State Park.

Go for a spin this weekend
SCHAFER MEADOWS — Grays Harbor’s Fiber Arts Guild will host its sixth annual Schafer Meadows Fiber Arts Festival during the weekend of Friday-Sunday, Oct. 9-11, in one of the original game farm barns at 104 Schafer Meadows Lane N.
The guild has been active under different names for more than 25 years, participating in demonstrations at fairs and schools, sales and Christmas events. After being involved in many events over the years, the guild decided to host its own show and sale.
Lindsey warrants revealed
McCLEARY — Read the search warrant affidavit, and you just might come away thinking the guy is guilty of snatching Lindsey Baum. There were enough red flags raised for investigators to mount a massive search of his family property Sept. 25-26.
“The information we were getting … caused us some concern,” Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott said Tuesday of the clues that led investigators to the man.
The Vidette is not naming the man because he has not been charged with a crime.
Relay to honor slain Monte grad
Imagine shouldering a 50-pound pack, marching 30 miles at an average clip of 3.4 miles per hour — a fast walk or slow jog. Then do it again. And again. And again.
Twelve U.S. Air Force Special Tactics teammates will march 824 miles in 10 days to honor the memory of Montesano High School graduate Staff Sgt. Timothy Davis, who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this year.
Each of the 12 carry a memorial baton engraved with the name of a fallen special tactics training squadron teammate, including Davis.

Bulldogs’ domination on gridiron continues
RAINIER — Montesano’s stingy defense again did its job, holding Rainier scoreless, while the Bulldog offense had its way with the Mountaineers to the tune of a 60-0 in a 1A Evergreen League football victory Friday, Oct. 2, at Rainier. The top-ranked Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Ryan Campbell. Monte’s Tyler Bavaro followed that up with a 19-yard rushing touchdown midway through the first, and a late-quarter Tyler Fry 9-yard TD run helped put the Dogs 20-0 heading into the second frame.
River Ridge holds off Elma’s bid for come-from-behind win
ELMA — Trading solid defensive stands and punts throughout much of the contest, neither team had more than a handful of shots at the end zone. But, down by six points, with a fresh set of downs and just under a minute left in the game on the River Ridge 25-yard line, Elma’s bid for their first league win went by the wayside when River Ridge’s Brad Wallace intercepted a pass in the end zone to seal the Hawks’ 20-14 2A Evergreen Conference football victory, Friday, Oct. 2, at Davis Field.
Tumwater bests Bulldog golfers
TUMWATER — With all five players shooting 40 or fewer, Class 2A Tumwater used its impressive depth to knock off Montesano 188-223 in a non-league boys golf match up Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course. Medalist honors went to Tumwater’s Jackson Boe and his 35. Shawn Dierick was the low man for Montesano, shooting a 41. The next two lowest scores came from the Shea brothers, Matthew and Nathan who each turned in 45s.
