By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin

McCleary — RUN!!! The bears have come “Out of Hibernation!”
NO, not away from them — head out quick for McCleary.
The 51st Bear Festival is almost here. The fun will begin Friday, July 9, and run through Sunday, July 11, with this year’s theme, “Out of Hibernation.”
A new event will kick the festival off at 11 a.m. Friday — a carnival that will continue ’till 11 p.m., with the same hours Saturday. Also new, a royal dinner is set for 5-7 p.m. Friday at the community center, with the coronation of this year’s Bear Festival queen to follow at 8 p.m. at Beerbower Park, next to city hall.

Friday will also include a “Gun & Hoses” softball tournament beginning at 6:30 p.m., with members of the McCleary police and fire departments in friendly competition. Music, including karaoke and a teen dance in the park, will follow the coronation.
Saturday, hardy souls — and bodies — can join the Run from the Bears fun run at 9 a.m.
For the second year, the McCleary Rods & Rides Car Show will feature classic rides and hot rods from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Third and Fourth streets. |

First foray visits
Grays Harbor libraries
By Leif Nesheim

The Montesano library is my home library. It’s where I pick up books I’ve reserved, buy used books and sometimes attend luncheon presentations. Built in 1960 by the Abel family as a memorial to W.H. Abel, it served as headquarters for the Grays Harbor Rural Library District before voters chose to join the Timberland Regional Library district in 1968. My favorite thing about the library is the Shakespeare garden outside the front doors.

The next day we detoured to Hoquiam to visit the Hoquiam Timberland Library. It’s a Carnegie library. Built in 1911, it’s got nifty architectural details worth checking out. (Photo of and by Leif Nesheim.)
Lavender, wild thyme, violets, rose and other flowers and herbs mentioned in the bard’s writings are interspersed with his garden-themed quotes, printed on metal signs.
The library was my first stop on the 27-library tour I plan to complete and document this summer. The Timberland Regional Library Foundation is sponsoring a “passport” program to encourage folks to visit all the libraries in the five-county library district and the surrounding communities.

Monte lost to Centralia Tuesday, 13-3, meaning they will play

“Oleanna,” directed by Gary Morean, will show at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays beginning this weekend through the rest of the month, at the Driftwood Theatre, 120 E. Third St. The play tells the story of its two characters — a professor and a college student — who form a bond when the student asks for additional help in class. However, the student later joined a group who believe that the professor sexually harassed her in their first meeting and filed a report to the tenure committee.
