Bridge
at Harp Road reopens, too

A $2.1 million county road project up the Middle Satsop Road
north of Brady will soon have motorists driving as the birds
fly - higher and straighter.
A series of curves on a substandard road are being eliminated
as the crew from Wilder Construction of Olympia heads down the
stretch toward completion, probably sometime in November.
The new sixth-tenths of a mile section of road will go over the
hill instead of meandering around it. |
|

The project involves moving about 150,000 cubic yards of material
- an amount equal to about 15,000 dump-truck loads of dirt. About
two thirds of the dirt and rock has been used to build the new
embankment and the other third is being hauled to a pit site
about a mile north of the project. (Photo by Dee Anne Shaw)
Meantime, the substandard portion of county road will serve as
the "new" paved access to the Middle Satsop River boat
launch, which currently is hardly more than a graveled lot beside
the winding road. |

Montesano meets
federal standards
By Dee Anne Shaw

Montesano students may have just returned to school on Tuesday,
but their teachers already have their first report cards. The
Washington Assessment of Student Learning results were released
Thursday, Aug. 30, and the results give educators a chance to
pick up where they left off last spring.
The Montesano School District achieved "adequate yearly
progress" in all categories and met the benchmarks set by
the federal "No Child Left Behind" legislation. |

It was back to school for all grades in Montesano on
Tuesday, including these three kindergartners at Beacon Elementary
School. They probably can't spell WASL - yet - but they sure
do know how much they love learning to read and just being in
school with the big kids. From left, Kodi Hunley, Justin Garrison

Montesano downs Elma, 28-20, in overtime
of season opener
By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter
After dominating a quarter-and-a-half of play, and owning
a 20-0 lead, Elma looked to be in the driver's seat of their
139th football meeting with Montesano. But with 5:34 left in
the first half, a muffed punt turnover by the Eagles allowed
the Bulldogs to snatch away momentum that had squarely sat on
the visitor's sideline, and ride it out to a 28-20 non-league
overtime victory at Rottle Field on Friday, Aug. 31. |

According to the "Washington State Report Card" released
Aug. 30, McCleary School made "adequate yearly progress"
in all areas and all grades tested, third through eighth, on
the Washington Assessment for Student Learning for 2006-07. Elma,
however, is one of four districts in the county with schools
that didn't make "adequate yearly progress," though
the district is questioning at least one of those released results,
Superintendent Howard King said Wednesday.
Mark Reed's new leader enthusiastically takes
the reins
Mark Reed Hospital and Grays Harbor Public Hospital District
No. 1's new chief executive officer, Renee Dunham, who began
Aug. 1 after her longtime predecessor Jean Roberts retired, has
no problem with small towns. She grew up in one - Monroe (though
the town northeast of Seattle's been growing.) Before coming
to McCleary, Dunham, 30, worked for seven years at a hospital
in the Eastern Washington town of Dayton, northeast of Walla
Walla. Dayton is smaller than Monroe and just a bit larger than
McCleary.

All five Season Championships decided

That was evident on Season Championship night, as four out of

not to mention pole positions into the feature races, parlaying
them into wins and more importantly, season titles, on Saturday,
Sept. 1, at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.
