Celebrating small towns and rural lifestyles
Curfmans of Oakville among those honored at Chamber’s annual Farm-City Dinner

By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin
Vidette Reporter

What do storybook characters, hundreds of thousands of frying chickens and oodles of pumpkins have in common? Clifton and Avis Curfman — who arrived in Grays Harbor County in 1969 and developed a hugely successful family farm in Oakville.

Recognizing the couple’s decades of hard work and legacy of homespun good living, the Montesano Chamber of Commerce and WSU Extension presented the Curfmans with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 37th annual Farm City Dinner on Sept. 27 at the Grange hall in Brady.

More than 100 people attended the dinner to partake of the home-cooked meatloaf meal and honor some community members who have made the area such a rich place to live.

37th annual Harvest Celebration and Farm Tour set for Oct. 6
Drive yourself, or guided bus tours depart from Abel House

Looking for a way to spice up the coming weekend — and welcome the harvest season? No problem. Just head for Montesano’s Harvest Celebration and Farm Tour on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Whether you favor pancakes, pumpkin pie, quilts, lettuce, dahlias, old-time banjo music, gorgeous trees, barbecue, buffalo (no, not a buffalo barbecue) or helping save the environment, there’ll be lots to enjoy.

Folks have a choice of taking the farm tour on their own from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to sites in the “eastest” part of East Grays Harbor, or buses will leave at 8 and 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. from the Abel House Bed and Breakfast, 117 Fleet St. S. in Montesano. Cost for the bus is $3/person and $5/family on the day of the event. If the buses are full, names will be accepted for a standby list.

Montesano - Elma Golf

By Jerrad Kellogg

ELMA – With all five Elma golfers turning in scores under 45, as opposed to only two from Montesano, the upper-classmen heavy Eagles used their experience and depth to out-shoot the relatively young Bulldogs, 207-218, in a non-league boys golf match on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Oaksridge Golf Course.

“We just have a little more experience than Montesano, with three seniors holding down the middle of our lineup,” Elma coach Randy Estes said after the match.
Montesano coach Lloyd Aldrich was pleased.

His team’s performance included the match medalist, senior Justin Allebaugh, carding a 36, but the coach gave Elma its dues.“

This is a pretty decent team score for us,” Aldrich said. “We just played them at the wrong time. (Elma) has been playing good lately and they deserved to win.”

District 5 lays off its fire chief

Last fall, when Grays Harbor Fire District 5 discussed laying off a paramedic, Chief Randy Coggan suggested to Commissioners Eric Patton, John Fields and Michael Spencer that the financially strapped district could help itself better by laying him off. Coggan also reasoned that, while he “enabled” district personnel to do their jobs, he was not in the field saving lives everyday, as the paramedics are. But the financial problems that have plagued the district since they took over the Medic One ambulance service from Hospital District 1 almost three years ago haven’t let up. So the commissioners announced Monday they had — very reluctantly — agreed to lay off Coggan, who has been with them since July 2005.

of FDR’s stop in Montesano.

Do you remember where you were 70 years ago on Oct. 1, 1937? That was the day President Franklin D. Roosevelt swept through the Olympic Peninsula on an historical trip that sowed the seeds for creation of the Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. If you were among the thousands who gathered along Pioneer Avenue on the day he drove through town, The Vidette would like you to be in a photo we plan to take at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Fleet Park.

McCleary opposes development application
The City of McCleary has put Grays Harbor County on notice that its citizens’ need for clean and adequate water is important enough to use legal means if necessary to oppose county approval of an application for a large lot division without requiring an Environmental Impact Statement. The county has applications from corporations, all three of which name Kenneth E. Brogan as their “agent,” for large lot subdivisions northwest of McCleary. But a letter the city sent to County Planner Jane Hewitt in September says, “it is the city’s understanding” that the county is requiring Environmental Impact Statements on only two of the parcels, though “all three adjacent large lot subdivisions are owned by one entity.”

Harbor receives state trail grants
gton counties receiving grants from the National Recreational Trails Program. The county was awarded $13,998 for two projects: upgrading campsites at the Straddleline Off-Road Vehicle Park at the Grays Harbor/Thurston County border and to buy sound-testing equipment needed for certification training seminars and support sound testing at off-road vehicle events for the American Motorcycle Association. The park, the only off-road vehicle park of its kind in Western Washington, serves as the only staffed trailhead for the Capitol Forest.

Elma’s Vest sixth at Portland cross-country meet

PORTLAND, Ore. – Pitted against some bigger schools from throughout Washington and Oregon, Elma notched a 10th place team spot out of 18, with Elma’s Mike Vest capturing a sixth place individual spot from the Nike Pre-National Cross Country Meet at the Portland Meadows race track, on Saturday, Sept. 29. In Division II, the third-toughest division aside from Elite and Div. I, Vest traversed the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 43 seconds.

Montesano volleyball whips Winlock in three
Holding Winlock to less than 11 points in every game, Montesano easily took the 1A Evergreen League volleyball match-up, 25-9, 25-10, 25-11, on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Bo Griffith Memorial Gymnasium. The Bulldogs (5-1 in league) fresh off of winning a title at the Grizzly Alumni Association Volleyball Tournament last weekend, continued their winning ways by taking advantage of numerous Cardinal errors and staking their offense to the power-hitting of Aubree Pocklington and Patsy McGarrah.
