Seven people were honored last Friday at the Elma Chamber of
Commerce's annual Community Recognition and Awards Banquet.
The inspiring evening at the Microtel Inn & Suites had a
Hawaiian flavor, and this year's citizen of the year, Dawn Baker,
even learned how to dance the hula. |

New batting building
a huge hit |

Thanks to community
donations, Montesano now has a batting building officially named
The Bowe Bowers Batting Building.

It all started with a casual conversation between Jeff Bowers,
Bowers Construction president and Pat Pace, the Montesano High
School fastpitch coach, at the team's annual fundraising golf
tournament in March of 2006.
Bowers inquired about what the high school could use, when one
of Pace's players caddying for the group chimed in with
an indoor facility and the ball got rolling from there.
"I can do this," Bowers thought to himself. "Get
some donations and put it together." |

High School varsity fastpitch squad including his big sister,
Jordan Bowers, to commemorate him as an honorary fan and to thank
him for all of the work that was done in his name at a small
ceremony on Wednesday, April 25, outside of the Bowe Bowers Batting
Building just adjacent to Rottle Field on the MHS campus. (Photo

Bighill nets five goals in 9-1 Bulldog
victory
By Jerrad Kellogg

Montesano took an unassuming 2-1 lead into halftime, then
the Bulldogs erupted for seven more goals in a, 9-1, thrashing
of Rochester, in the 1A Southwest Washington boys soccer match,
Thursday, April 26 at Rottle Field.
Seven Montesano seniors making their last home appearance
were honored on senior night. And they all went out in
style with the big win, but none more than Adam Bighill. The
senior tallied five goals in helping the Bulldogs hold on to
second place in the league with an overall record of 10-4, behind
only the unbeaten White Salmon Bruins (14-0).

Enrollment dip triggers cuts at Monte schools
An enrollment dip of 84 students this year has triggered
"reduction in force" letters to six teachers/certificated
staff in the Montesano School District. Superintendent Marti
Harruff said she and the School Board believe the decline is
directly related to the closure of the Weyerhaeuser mills at
Aberdeen and Cosmopolis, and that the long-term trend is for
growth in Montesano. She's sensitive to the bad news coming on
the heels of voter support for new schools, but said she's also
hopeful that when all is said and done, two - and no more than
three positions - will actually have to be cut.
Contest for mayor in Monte
Ron Schillinger, the city of Montesano's forester for the past
20 years, announced Wednesday he is running for election as mayor.
Schillinger, 60, is scheduled to retire in July, but, he said,
"I love Montesano and Montesano has been very, very good
to me. It's a great place to live, a great place to raise a family.
And there's a real interest on my part in giving back and continuing
to participate." Schillinger's bid pits him against incumbent
Dick Stone, who intends to seek a second term.
McCleary School to see much change
Next school year will see lots of changes at the McCleary School.
Besides beginning a $9.7 million modernization, which is currently
being designed by John Crook of J.F.C. Architects Inc. of Longview
and will likely be completed about August 2009, the school has
a new assistant principal, and four teachers and a popular part-time
librarian are leaving.
