Piecing together a lot of love
By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin
Vidette Reporter
Since the first of the year, nine residents of the Beehive Assisted Living Community in McCleary have been piecing together a lot of love. Currently, that’s taken the form of a dozen warm, colorful quilts destined for babies born in the Willapa Harbor Hospital at South Bend.
McCleary’s Mark Reed Hospital doesn’t deliver babies nowadays, and Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen is already covered by several church quilting guilds, said Jan Hendricksen, the Beehive’s activities director, who also happens to be a WSU Master Quilter. |

The lovely quilts will soon be making their way to the hospital in neighboring Pacific County. Sometimes a wee one is born into a family with pressing financial issues, and a sweet quilt not only keeps the infant cozy, but warms the hearts of the little one’s parents, as well. The ladies, however, aren’t attaching any strings to the quilts they’ve labored over.

Tim Trimble, the Montesano School District’s athletic director, received a letter of reprimand from Superintendent Marti Harruff last Thursday, March 27, in the wake of an investigation that determined he tampered with a high school counselor’s e-mail account.
Trimble’s technology privileges have been revoked and his authority as athletic director has been scaled back. He also teaches math. |

The district launched its investigation March 5 when it was discovered that the reason the counselor, Tami Herzog, was having trouble with her e-mail account was because her messages were being diverted to another account. The investigation determined that Trimble, who later confessed, had diverted her e-mail to an “administrative” account that he had access to through his role as the district’s information/technology administrator.

Search for fair director broadens
With the impending retirement of Grays Harbor County Fair and Tourism director, Debbie Adolphsen, the search for her replacement continues. Adolphsen, 54, who has held the post for six years and has been part of fairgrounds and tourism activities for two decades, announced last August after a highly successful fair that she was planning to retire in May “to have time in my life for family and friends.” The Grays Harbor County Commissioners thought they had found Adolphsen’s successor, but that person decided to retain his current employment with a parks department. The commissioners said they would broaden the search for a new director by advertising in other areas and consider increasing the salary, currently around $4,700 per month.
Elma pegs school layoffs at 7 or 8
The projection that enrollment in the Elma School District could plunge by 70 or more students next school year is prompting the district to lay off seven or eight teachers, Superintendent Howard King said last Friday. And “we haven’t even got to classified (employees) yet,” he said. The superintendent said that so far the district is aware of only one potential retirement at the end of this school year. “If we had more retirements or more people moving, it could lower that number (of teachers to be laid off),” King said. “But at this point, we don’t see that many people retiring. Not this year.”
McCleary board revisits school needs
