Maryann Welch, a third-generation Harborite who came up through the ranks to become the director of the county's Public Health and Social Services Department, will retire this fall. Her career in county government dates to the 1970s and she's been a department director for more than 20 years.

"I have been very fortunate in my career with the county," she said. "I couldn't have planned it as well.

"I think very highly of her, and certainly she has done an outstanding job," Commission Chairman Al Carter of Hoquiam, said. "She runs an excellent department."

A freshly landscaped entrance will greet fairgoers next week and the Fair staff adds their smiles to the bright, welcoming sign.

"It helps when you have a perfectionist doing the work," Fair manager Debbie Adolphsen said of Dave Persell, the fair board member who oversaw the work and did much of it himself.

The Fair opens for a five-day run on Wednesday, Aug. 8-12. The new entrance was made necessary by the winter wind storm that toppled trees all over Grays Harbor. The fairgrounds was no exception

Third straight title for DeBenedetti

8th Annual Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals

By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter

ELMA Jon DeBenedetti notched his third straight Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals championship as he led wire-to-wire in the annual race's eighth edition, and easily reigned in the $4,000 first prize on Saturday, July 28, at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.

DeBenedetti, out of Medford, Ore., has been the race's champion since 2004. He repeated in 2005, but a third title had to wait until 2007, as last year's race was called off after the untimely death of Fred Brownfield, the Raceway's former promoter.

Montesano school bus safety debated

The Montesano School District "has cause for concern about our buses," Superintendent Marti Harruff told the School Board at its July 19 meeting, and she said she is implementing changes that will result in better ongoing bus maintenance. Roger Garrick, the district's former transportation supervisor, vehemently disagrees with any implication that the buses he oversaw weren't well maintained. He granted an interview to The Vidette because "now they're saying I didn't create an environment for safety." It's one thing to lose a job in what he doesn't believe was a purely fiscal decision, "it's another when they start attacking my personal credibility and the safety I maintained for those kids. That's enough."

Mere oversight on load of logs, buyer says
Pat Tagman of Willis Enterprises takes issue with the Montesano city attorney's opinion that retired forester Ron Schillinger, who is running for mayor, illegally approved the donation of logs to a football fundraiser. "Nothing illegal, whatsoever, took place," said Tagman, who is a manager and log buyer for Willis Enterprises of Oakville, which partnered with the city to support the fundraiser. Well-intentioned, busy people forget things all the time, he said. "It happens," Tagman said. "When it's brought to your attention, you make a correction."

Primary election ballots go in the mail this week
A new election calendar is in place this year and it means the county Auditor's Office will mail ballots to all registered voters this week in time for an Aug. 21 primary election. In previous years, the primary has taken place in mid-September. Auditor Vern Spatz reports that by law the ballots must be mailed by Friday, but he expects they'll be mailed by Thursday, Aug. 2. He had hoped for an Aug. 1 mailing, but when the sample ballot was circulated it was discovered that Ron Schillinger's name had been misspelled. He's a candidate for mayor in Montesano.

Opinion by Vidette reporter Jerrad Kellogg: Well it is going to happen (Well it happened) Barry Bonds is going to (has )break (broken) Hank Aaron's all-time homerun record. It took Aaron 23 seasons to tally 755 homeruns 15 seasons of which he hit 30 or more homers, including 8 seasons where he hit 40 or more. It has taken Bonds 22 seasons 14 of which he hit 30 or more, including 7 seasons hitting 40 or more dingers. On the surface they seem like similar timelines, but why has it taken Bonds one year less, when he has done it with one fewer 40-homer season and one less 30-homer season? Well the answer is one of his 40-or-more seasons was his single season record breaking season of 2001, when he hit 73. That is also the same time frame when steroid use in baseball was believed to be its highest.

PASCO Taking place east of the Cascade Mountains the Southern Washington 14-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball State Tournament escaped the flurry of rain showers experienced on the west side of the state last week, but the East Grays Harbor All-Stars were not able to stay for the duration as they went 1-2 in pool play Wednesday, July 18 through Friday, July 20, and then 0-1 in championship play on Saturday, July 21, getting eliminated from the single elimination bracket.

TUMWATER The East Grays Harbor All-Stars' stay at the Southern Washington 13-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball State Tournament was shortened due to foul weather forcing the tourney to go from double-elimination to single elimination and a subsequent 5-4 loss to Longview in the first round on Saturday, July 21, at Tumwater.
