Lauckhart wins Downey Award
Enthusiastic helper for all seasons & reasons

By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin
Vidette Reporter

Folks who know Roger Lauckhart know he’s willing to lend a hand wherever — and whenever — it’s needed. But the Montesano man is perhaps even better known for doing it with great enthusiasm.

The Friends of the W.H. Abel Memorial Timberland Library have named him this year’s recipient of the Margaret Downey Memorial Community Service Award.

Margaret Downey, who died in 1996, was the driving force behind the creation of Montesano’s Festival of Lights. She was also active in her church, at the library and with young people, says outgoing Friends president, Alice Hutchinson.

More than 220 Bulldog supporters filled the Montesano High School Commons on Saturday, Oct. 27, to celebrate and welcome the third class of inductees into the Montesano High School Hall of Fame.
The class included distinguished alumni, an inspirational teacher/administrator and championship athletes spanning from the Class of 1924 through 1993.

Those receiving accolades this time around were 1993 graduate Megan Prkut, 1992 grad Ryan Fournier, Coach Al Heyntsen, the 1983 State Champion football team and 1946 grad Marvin Tennefoss. Representatives received the honors for three deceased inductees — 1927 grad Albert Guggenbickler, 1924 grad Forest Kelsey and beloved former faculty member, Herb Reiter.

Tired Monte bus drivers running on fumes

A first-year bus driver in the Montesano School District became so ill Monday morning with flu-like symptoms that she radioed the bus garage to say she couldn’t complete the route. Unfortunately, there was no one in the garage or at the other end of the radio that early in the morning. All the other drivers were already out on their routes and the garage was empty.

New school plan ready for public comment
The public will have a chance to hear from the architects who are designing the new, $14 million Simpson School at a public meeting set for 6:30 tonight, Nov. 1, in the gym at the school. Architects from BLRB will share their conceptual drawings and ask for the public’s feedback. The plans now call for a one-story building rather than the two-story structure that was considered likely at the time the bond was passed. The architects are prepared to answer questions related to that recommendation. Superintendent Marti Harruff said the design committee gave the matter careful thought and unanimously endorsed the switch.

Injunction sought over park plan
Lawyers for Jay Sterling of Montesano filed paperwork in Grays Harbor Superior Court on Tuesday asking for an injunction to stop all work related to Beacon Park and its wetland mitigation plan. Sterling has been at odds with the city for over a year over protecting public access to the Chehalis River and property the city owns south of the overpass known as the State Route 107 Osprey site. He believes neither the council nor the citizenry are fully aware of the city council’s plan to use the wetlands south of town to mitigate for development of Beacon Park.

Elma boys, Monte’s Harris earn spots at X-country state

LACEY –Three solid individual efforts helped the Elma boys amass 119 points, which was good enough for the team to finish in sixth place of the Class 2A race on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the District IV 2A-1A-B cross country meet at St. Martin’s University in Lacey. Elma’s Michael Vest took second overall in the 2A boys meet with his time of 16:21, while teammate Cody Sisco finished ninth at 16:58 and Todd Jackson 13th with 17:16, to help send their team to the state meet this Saturday in Pasco.

Bulldog soccer sitting on the verge of state tournament berth
KALAMA — A continuous peppering of the Kalama goal translated into a 3-0 Montesano win in the District IV Class 1A girls soccer tournament on Monday, Oct. 29, at Kalama. The Bulldogs out-shot the Chinooks, 35-2, in the victory that keeps Monte in the state tournament running. Montesano (14-3-1) is now set to take on the Mossyrock/Onalaska/Napavine combine for the last district state berth, in a winner-to-state, loser-out contest scheduled for 5:30 p.m., today, at Kalama.

Winlock football forfeits to Montesano

Montesano, with the 1A Evergreen League Championship already in their back pocket, received a league football game forfeit from Winlock, who decided not to play its regularly scheduled game with the Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 26, at Winlock. The winless Cardinals only had 15 players on its roster before the game and conceded the contest to the Bulldogs who move to 6-0 in league, and 7-2 overall on the year. Montesano’s next game is a district crossover contest against Kalama this Friday, at Rottle Field.
