Newspaper subscription leads to finding family nearby
By Tommi Halvorsen Gatlin
Vidette Reporter
ELMA — Memorial Day is a time for remembering. But for some, last Memorial Day was also a time for the present, as well as the future.
Though no one knew it at the time, when Alice Knight of Elma gave a subscription of The Vidette to her next-door neighbor last April, she was giving him more than just the newspaper.
The neighbor, John Tiland, “did a favor for me and he wouldn’t let me pay him,” said Knight, who had shared copies of the paper with him at times. “And he said, ‘tell you what, you can give me a subscription to The Vidette.’ ”

To say, ‘the rest is history,’ would be an understatement. Through the newspaper, Tiland, 73, found information on a cousin from Shawnee, Okla., he’d been searching for and was also connected with the cousin’s son, whom he’d never met but who, though he lives in Olympia, works just a mile from Tiland’s home. |

Robbery, rodeo, parade and good, family fun July 3
By The Vidette Staff
OAKVILLE — The town of Oakville in East Grays Harbor County might not be real big, but its traditions last real long — especially when it comes to Independence Day.
The 2010 Independence Day Parade and celebration, however, will take place a day early, Saturday, July 3.

But though it’s early, it will still feature a lot of what the “Fourth of July” in America is all about. It will also include something else that’s a real tradition — in Oakville, anyway.

Cosi's Sweatman out-duels Simpson in Hobby Stocks
By The Vidette Staff

Joining Muller in victory lane was Cosmopolis’ Tom Sweatman — who edged Hoquiam’s Zack Simpson in the Hobby Stock A-Main, 360 Sprint winner Seth Bergman of Snohomish and Ford Focus Midget victor Reece Goetz also of Snohomish.

Big trouble in little McCleary
McCLEARY — A draft revised 2010 budget made available to McCleary City Council members the day before their June 23 meeting doesn’t “paint a pretty picture,” Mayor Gary Dent said at the meeting. In fact, it could mean laying off three employees.
And a difficult time has been made worse, Dent said last Friday, by major problems with some city computers. A software program that operated hand-held meter-readers for electricity (and possibly the water) was deleted, creating major, time-consuming problems with utility billing, and an anti-virus program was turned off, Dent said.
Larsen to go on mission trip Montesano High School grad Jared Larsen of Brady is preparing for a two-year mission trip in Nicaragua through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Larsen graduated in the top 10 of his class in 2009 and attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah for one year, during which time he turned in his application to serve a full time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He plans to complete his education after returning from the mission.
On May 26, he entered the Mission Training Center in Provo, Utah for a 9-week course on how to do missionary work and intensive Spanish language training.
