Bryndon Ecklund, who leads Elma High School’s top 10 graduating seniors this year with a 3.98 grade point average, is really “on the ball” — baseball that is. The 18-year-old valedictorian, who’s played a lot of the sport, recently signed a letter of intent with the Air Force Academy. He is receiving academic scholarships to attend the academy, located near Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Montesano VFW Post 2455’s Honor Guard listened while the post commander, Richard Exendine conducted the traditional Memorial Day service on Monday morning at Fleet Park. The veterans paid a special tribute to Marion Bogdanovich, the decorated Marine who died last week. The 79-year-old lifelong Monte resident had battled leukemia the last eight years.

Doug Farmer of Montesano shared a quiet moment with his 4-year-old daughter, Baylie, during the Memorial Day service at Fleet Park, where Jim McLean of Brady, (Air Force, 1953-57), and Joie Schneider of Montesano, (Marine Reserves, 1956-58) stood with respect during the service. Leland Tilley, 81, took up his customary position and stance during the annual Memorial Day observance. Tilley, a Montesano resident for the past 42 years, served in the Navy from 1944-46, in the Pacific Theater.

ELMA – Elma High School standout – both academically as well as athletically – Bryndon Ecklund will continue his baseball playing career at the next level. Ecklund signed a letter of intent to play for the Air Force Academy on Wednesday, May 14, in the EHS Commons area. Although he will play baseball, Ecklund was singled out for his exploits in the classroom.

He has maintained a 3.98 grade point average, which was good enough for him to receive offers of academic scholarships both the University of Washington and Washington State University, along with the Air Force. However, it is the prospect of becoming an F-22 pilot that swayed his decision to attend the academy, he said.

Relays for Life stressing ‘There’s No Place Like Hope’

They’ve been “in the works” for months — now the annual Grays Harbor Relay For Life events in Elma and Hoquiam are about to begin. They take place Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31. This year’s theme is “There’s No Place Like Hope,” which is also the name of Vickie Girard’s “survival guide” for cancer patients and their families. Teams throughout the Harbor have been busily raising funds at activities ranging from car washes to garage sales to chiropractic services — and much more. The proceeds go to the American Cancer Society’s continuous fight against a foe that has affected millions of people and their loved ones.

Elma and McCleary put surprise proposal before advisory panel on ambulance service

The Grays Harbor Fire District 5 Joint Advisory Committee had its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday. Earlier in the day, however, District 5 received a joint letter from McCleary Mayor Wally Bentley, Mayor Dave Osgood of Elma and Jerry Banks, commissioner for Fire District 12, suggesting District 5 join them in contracting with American Medical Resources — a private ambulance service. Bentley and Banks are two of the Advisory Committee’s four members. Commissioner Jerry Bailey of District 5 and Elma Councilman Jim Sorensen are the others. Although he’s a city councilman and represents Elma on the ambulance committee, Sorensen said afterward he was not aware of the letter until he arrived for the meeting. The Advisory Committee was formed as part of a settlement agreement reached in mediation in January between District 5 and the other three entities.

Monte’s Vetter a double winner at 1A state track

TACOMA – Montesano’s senior track standout Jake Vetter three-peated as a state high jump champion and added a state triple jump title to his resume as he enjoyed a successful trip to the 1A/2A State Track and Field Championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma this past weekend. The University of Washington bound Vetter was dominating in his title victories. In his specialty – the high jump – Vetter left his competitors in the dust, clearing a new personal best (6-foot-7), after the field had peaked at 6-foot-2. He then tried three times at 6-foot-8, but missed at the height 11 inches over his head.

Elma’s Stark, Thomas bring home 2A state titles
TACOMA – Elma senior Christian Stark not only made good on a bid to recapture his 2A state 300-meter hurdle title, he collected a 110-meter hurdle championship in the process at the State 2A/1A Track and Field Championships at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School this past weekend. Stark's Elma teammate Brandi Thomas also nabbed a state title in the triple jump.

Allebaugh nabs third at state golf
BELLINGHAM – Montesano senior Justin Allebaugh finished just three strokes off the pace of the state champion, and two shots behind the runner up to nab third place overall at the state 1A boys state golf tournament on Thursday, May 22, at the North Bellingham Golf Course. Allebaugh was the tourney’s most consistent golfer, firing similar rounds in the two day event. He shot a 75 on the first day and then turned in a 76 on day-two for a total of 151, which left him three shots behind Chimacum’s Chris Johnson who earned the state title after blazing the course with a 69 on the first day, and held the overall lead with a 79 on day-two for a total of 148. Ilwaco’s Jake Whealdon was second with 149 (72, 77).
