Cancer claims retired teacher, Vidette columnist, Reed McQuaid and McCleary’s Fred Keel

Reed W. McQuaid, the unflappable, pipe-smoking, retired high school history teacher who loved challenging our complacency with his humor and insights on everything from high gas prices to our involvement in Iraq, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, of brain cancer. He was 70. His columns on everyday life and the political scene won several awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. But more importantly, they were enormously popular with local readers.

Fred Keel, the former longtime McCleary fire chief who, with the aid of his family, friends and countless community members, waged a 15-month battle with multiple myeloma, died Saturday, June 21, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. The 61-year-old Keel, who had for years risen from bed at 3:30 a.m. to work 12-hour shifts at the Simpson Door Co., was a quiet man who didn’t like to burden others with his problems. A member of the McCleary Fire Department for 25 years and its chief for a decade until retiring a couple of years ago, Keel much preferred helping others.

School’s out — construction begins
Lift, turn ninety degrees counterclockwise, move

By The Vidette Staff

Superintendent Marti Harruff wasn’t kidding last Thursday when she said it’s time now to “buckle up” after the School Board awarded the construction project to low-bidder Rognlin’s, Inc. of Aberdeen. The company’s bid came in just under the architect’s $10.1 million estimate.

A huge crane was brought in on Wednesday this week to move one of the so-called “portable” classrooms at the Simpson School as site work began in earnest. The new school is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.

Haigh to focus on state’s ‘small schools factor’

Thirty-fifth District state Rep. Kathy Haigh, D-Shelton, told McCleary School Board members at their meeting June 19 that, regarding education, she intends to focus on two items during the next legislative session. Haigh said she will address changing the way school districts now must plan their budgets for the year ahead before even knowing how many students they’ll have. And she wants to see the state’s “small-schools factor,” part of a formula to help fund the unique needs of small rural schools, increased. It hasn’t been changed since she was first elected 10 years ago, Haigh said.

Bryan Park gets a boost

On behalf of the Forest C. and Ruth V. Kelsey Foundation, Chuck Caldwell of Montesano presented a $5,000 check to the City Council on Tuesday saying the foundation hopes it will jumpstart a community drive to get going on Bryan Park.

He noted that Forest Kelsey, former owner of Whitney’s Inc. who left his fortune to the community, loved bringing people to town via the east entrance because it was so beautiful.

As an added incentive, Caldwell next handed Mayor Ron Schillinger a $500 personal check as a contribution from the Caldwell family. “We’re hoping other people in the town will support it and let’s get that entrance looking like it should look,” he said.

Fire Dist. 5 faces a Monday bank deadline on $400,000 debt
For Grays Harbor Fire District 5, the ticking of the clock is becoming deafening. But the district’s commissioners and others are hoping it won’t completely wind down without the bank’s approval on a last ditch effort to save the district from bankruptcy. A note for nearly $400,000 is due and payable to Sterling Savings Bank by June 30 — next Monday. And though the district’s acting chief, Brad Peckham, has had multiple contacts with Sterling, as of last Tuesday’s meeting of the district’s Ambulance Advisory Committee, there was still no answer on whether the bank would extend the loan, enabling the fire district and its ambulance service, Medic One, to survive, at least for now.
