She fell for the flames; they ‘make me smile’

Virginia Nelson never imagined they would own a collectible Corvette after they retired from the Montesano School District. Virginia Nelson blames it all on car salesman Dave Foss because he kept them waiting in the dealership showroom one day when they stopped by to see him.
Virginia was smiling as she looked at the bright red sports car with the hand-painted flames. Foss walked up beside her and told her she should take it for a spin. |

“Nah, I can’t do that,” she said. “We have milk in the car.” No problem, Foss said. He would just pop it into the staff refrigerator for her. One thing led to another. She took it for a spin. When they got back, Virginia looked at Tim. Tim looked at Virginia. Virginia said, “It makes me smile.”

| Farm animals attacked and left for dead west of Elma |

No leads in cat disappearances

Four goats and four sheep pastured at Far West Farms just west of Elma were attacked and killed over the weekend, apparently for sport by dogs roaming in the night. The goats' owner, Joan Martin, was out of town this weekend. On Monday, she struggled to hold back tears as she told about the phone call she received from her animals’ caretaker and her good friend, Pat Sanford.

Sanford arrived at the farm shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, July 20, to feed the animals and instead found an uneasy quiet. Then she started finding dead sheep and goats. The animals had last been checked about 9 p.m. Saturday. Sometime during the night, they were chased, pulled to the ground with bites to the jugular and left to bleed to death.

Pet owners still worried; no leads in cat disappearances
It’s still not known what happened to Rudy, the white and orange cat that belonged to Montesano resident Brian Schumacher and his family. Though Rudy’s remains have not been found, he’s been gone for two weeks, said Schumacher, who lives on North Sylvia Street, where a number of people have reported finding remains of cats in a field. He’s sure Rudy’s “not coming back.” Schumacher says Rudy’s were not among the remains of about eight cats he and a neighbor found July 13, in the field near Montesano High School. But authorities say that at this point, there’s no evidence that a cougar has been attacking cats there.
Elma Council reserves ‘right’ from past contract
The Elma City Council voted Monday to “move forward” in conjunction with participating in the planning of a possible Regional Fire Authority involving Elma and other entities in Grays Harbor County. Toward that end, the council chose two representatives, council members Debbie Thurman and Jim Taylor, to participate in the planning, in addition to Mayor Dave Osgood. The council also selected the mayor and Councilman Jim Sorensen, to participate in upcoming negotiations with Grays Harbor Fire District 5 on a contract regarding availability fees for emergency medical services for next year. The current contract will expire Dec. 31.
Candidate would fire director
Chris Crew, a Democrat from McCleary and one of seven candidates seeking election as the next county commissioner from east county, says the only way for Grays Harbor to fix its Planning & Building Department is to hire a new public services director. Earlier in the day, he told The Vidette he has spoken at length with the two commissioners whose votes he would need and he believes Commissioners Mike Wilson of Aberdeen and Al Carter of Hoquiam are ready to be convinced to replace Paul Easter. Wilson and Carter say they support Easter and they scoffed at the idea they would go along with terminating him. Each denied taking part in any conversations with Crew that could have led him to believe they were interested in making leadership changes in the Planning & Building Department.
Crew’s claim he could work as
attorney questioned
Chris Crew, the 31-year-old Democrat from McCleary, has campaigned on a platform of giving up a legal career in order to go into politics, but records show he is not a member of the bar association in either Oregon or Washington.
On Monday, he told the Elma City Council that he is “making personal sacrifices for the community” and that he is the candidate “who isn’t coming into this because they want to make a bunch of money. I have a law degree. I could be working as an attorney in a big city. But I don’t want to. I’m not looking to make a whole bunch of money. I want to do something that I can feel good about. And this is something I know I can feel good about.” In interviews with The Vidette, he said he discovered within weeks after law school, that he did not want to be an attorney. He later said he chose not to pay $700 to sit for a three-day test “if I wasn’t going to work as an attorney.” Records show he took the bar exam three times in Oregon — in July of 2005, February of 2006 and February of 2007 — and was unsuccessful.
