Monte Educators of the Year

Montesano School District names Roger Records as its teacher of the year and Londa Hills as its classified employee of the year.

When it comes to Montesano High School math teacher Roger Records, the answer was clear: Teacher of the Year.
And, in the case of Londa Hill, the committee sifting through nominations and calculating accomplishments concluded that the special education para-educator is the district’s classified employee of the year.

Both Records and Hill were honored last Friday, May 16, during the annual employee recognition luncheon. Superintendent Marti Harruff said she was “very pleased” to see both Records and Hill selected.

A funeral Mass for longtime Montesano educator and Bronze Star recipient Marion “Bogey” Bogdanovich, who died Wednesday, May 14, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, is set for 1 p.m. Friday, May 23, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Montesano, where he was a lifelong member. A reception will follow in the church’s hall.

The 79-year-old lifelong Monte resident had battled leukemia the last eight years.

A celebration of his life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Montesano High School gym, followed by a graveside service with full military honors in the Wynooche Cemetery. Marine Corps members from Fort Lewis and/or Bangor Air Base near Bremerton will form the honor guard. A reception will follow at the Montesano Moose Lodge.

Elma’s Ecklund signs to play ball at Air Force Academy

Elma High School Valedictorian

ELMA – Elma High School standout – both academically as well as athletically – Bryndon Ecklund will continue his baseball playing career at the next level. Ecklund signed a letter of intent to play for the Air Force Academy on Wednesday, May 14, in the EHS Commons area. Although he will play baseball, Ecklund was singled out for his exploits in the classroom.

He has maintained a 3.98 grade point average, which was good enough for him to receive offers of academic scholarships both the University of Washington and Washington State University, along with the Air Force. However, it is the prospect of becoming an F-22 pilot that swayed his decision to attend the academy, he said.

Permit puts PDA building on fast track

When something is said to be as big as a football field, that’s usually pretty big. Take the gutted “turbine” building between the cooling towers at the Satsop Development Park. It’s said to be as big as four football fields. But it’s a “perfect fit” for the Brown-Minneapolis Tank Co. because BMT’s tanks are big, too — some are three stories high. The company wants to move lock, stock and “tank” to the former nuclear power plant on Fuller Hill at Satsop. With BMT come at least 53 industrial jobs and the hope of several dozen more in the future.

New LEO Club gathers provisions for the troops in time for Memorial Day

It’s always a good time to honor those who have served in the military, defending America with their very lives, if necessary. But with Armed Forces Day just past, last Saturday, and with Memorial Weekend about to start, this is an especially poignant time of year to remember our veterans, as well as those currently serving in the military. A group of 15 Montesano High School students, all members of the newly formed LEO Club, have been working on a project to “Treat the Troops” from the community who are now on active duty. They’ve been collecting “treats,” such as snacks, books, games, toiletries and other items, as well as cash to purchase more supplies, as well as the packaging to send the goodies overseas. The club formed this year under the sponsorship of the Montesano Lions Club, and when it came time to consider their first big project, their advisor at school, April Pocklington, gave them a list of about a dozen possibilities. Flood victims could still use some help, and there are always great projects to do with young children.

Bulldogs nab second at district tourney

CENTRALIA – After charging through Ilwaco and LaCenter handily in the first two rounds of the District IV Class 1A Softball Championships earlier in the week at Centralia’s Fort Borst Park, Montesano crossed paths with a familiar post-season foe for the district crown in Castle Rock. And unfortunately for the Bulldogs the outcome was the same as last year’s state tourney where the Rockets rallied in the final inning to nip Monte by one run for the title.
This time it was a two-run homer from Lacey Seidl in the top of the seventh that gave Castle Rock the winning edge in the, 4-3, championship victory over Monte on Saturday, May 17.

Tempers flare at Raceway, ensuing black flags fly
ELMA – As the temperature warmed up, so did the drivers’ tempers as multiple black flags came out following rough driving and words between competitors in three classes. All of the commotion kept fans at Grays Harbor Raceway past midnight on Saturday, May 17. Two drivers in the newly formed Hornet class were disqualified in its feature race. Tom Izzi of Olympia and Jeff Monroe of Hoquiam were black flagged for rough driving. Puyallup’s Paul Short got an escort off the track in the Hobby Stock feature race after tangling with Chaz Wilder. Track officials had to restrain Wilder who was looking for a physical altercation with Short. Travis Rutz of Langley, British Columbia also received a pass off the track via the black flag after a severe talking to by race director Bob Valencia and assistant race director Mike Troy following a close call with Glenn Borden Jr., of Raymond. Troy had a near miss by a car in front of the start finish line. In an earlier Sprint heat race, Sedro Woolley’s Blake Cook got tangled up with former track champion Randy VanAagten of Shelton and track officials had to keep them separated. After the dust cleared, Shawn Rice (Sprints), Zack Simpson (Hobby Stocks), Shawn Dorie (Modifieds) and Tyson Blood (Hornets) emerged victorious in the evening’s main events.

Monte boys winners at districts
STEVENSON – Behind three individual titles from Jake Vetter, Montesano’s boys went on to win the team title at the District IV Class 1A Track Championships on Friday, May 16, at Stevenson.
The Bulldogs amassed 128 points, to top runner-up Kalama by 17 at 111. La Center took the girls crown with 138 points, while the Montesano girls placed fifth. The top four in each event advanced to the state meet in Tacoma this week.
