Montesano’s Harvest Celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27, and will include a variety of events for people interested in learning more about the rural farming and forest community in Montesano.
The main draw to this celebration are the farm and forest tours. The Farm Tour will travel through three different farms, each uniquely different and offering the visitor something that they are not likely to run across everyday.

Don Tapio, WSU Extension Office’s agent for Grays Harbor and Michael Dickerson will guide the farm tours. The farms located in the Wynooche Valley include the Anderson Family Farm, which will offer a tour of its Scottish Highland Cattle. The cattle are hand-raised and either grain or grass fed, and are also known for their redeeming quality as an even-tempered, good, docile pet, according to the Anderson Family Farm in the 2008 Farm Guide.

Hundreds joined John Hughes at the Log Pavilion
By Dee Anne Shaw
Vidette Editor
A steady stream of people flowed through the Pavilion throughout the afternoon. “It was like going to your own funeral but not being dead,” Hughes said. “It was wonderful. I was really overwhelmed by the turnout of the people and the nice things they had to say.”
Hughes’ career dates to his boyhood when he had a paper route. He was hired as a Daily World reporter in January of 1966, was named editor in 1977 and has been the editor and publisher for the past five years.

Debi Meredith of Montesano and other members of The Vidette staff were among the hundreds of Harborites who found their way to the Rotary Log Pavilion in Aberdeen on Tuesday to offer their good wishes to John C. Hughes, the editor and publisher of The Daily World, as he ends a 40-plus year career in newspapering to become Washington state’s chief oral historian for the Secretary of State’s Legacy Project. Prior to that, in the summer of 1960, the late, great Chapin Collins, editor and publisher of The Vidette, gave him a job. “I was a gopher. I did everything. It was great,” Hughes said. Today, both newspapers are owned by Stephens Media L.L.C. Hughes, 64, remains at the helm of The Daily World until Saturday. He starts his new job on Monday. |

Castle Rock - Montesano Football
By Jerrad Kellogg
Vidette Reporter
Since reclassification a few years back, Montesano has been left without a natural league rival. However, Monte and Castle Rock have found themselves pitted against one another in a number of nail-biting games with high stakes – from football to fastpitch – allowing a new sort of rivalry to bud. This most recent football installment was no exception as Castle Rock, trailing by one point, sat poised to snatch victory away with a field goal with 2:51 left in the game.

But Montesano’s Jason Franks got a piece of the kick, sending it wide right to help preserve the Bulldog’s 21-20 non-league victory on Friday, Sept. 12, at Rottle Field.

Time to trek to the river and watch turtles race
Hot dog. It’s September, which means it’s time to start talking about Lions and turtles and fun and games on the Wynooche River. The Montesano Lions Club’s annual “Turbo Turtle Trek” begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, with a free hot-dog barbecue and games for the kids. This event is a major fund-raiser for the Lions, but it’s also a chance for everyone to gather by the river to watch, wait and hope that their number matches the number on the first bright green plastic turtle that comes floating across the finish line. “Adopt” a numbered turtle for $5 and have a chance to win one of 11 prizes being given away this year — everything from the grand prize of a 10-night stay in Hawaii to Seahawk tickets, salmon fishing and gas cards.
