Master Gardener extraordinaire Nadine Sargent honored
By Dee Anne Shaw

Three people who have spent many years and untold hours working on behalf of Grays Harbor County were recognized during the opening ceremonies at the Fair in Elma last Wednesday, Aug. 6. Honored were County Commissioner Bob Beerbower, who is stepping down after three terms; the fair director, Debbie Adolphsen, who had hoped to retire but who is proving hard to replace, and Nadine Sargent, the master gardener/volunteer extraordinaire who moved away due to ill health but who “still has a place in our hearts.”

This year, the fair recognized the work of the WSU Extension’s master gardeners — especially — Nadine Sargent. Beerbower said after he became a commissioner, it didn’t take long before he encountered the full force of WSU Extension Agent Don Tapio. He soon realized Tapio and Sargent were tag-teaming him because “not far behind Don, a day or so later, would come Nadine. She popped up on a regular basis to make sure I was on the straight and narrow. ... She’s done a great job for the community and especially for the Master Gardeners.”
“Nadine moved away from us, but she’s been in everybody’s hearts,” Beerbower said. “She’s deserved this for a lot of years.” He stepped off the platform to present Sargent with a plaque dedicating the 2008 Grays Harbor County Fair to her. Apparently, this is one time Tapio didn’t keep her in the loop. She knew something was up, or why else would she be there? But the fact that the fair was being dedicated to her was a surprise. “Don, you stinker!” she said, as everybody laughed and gave her a standing ovation.

Veterans and entire community pitched in to show soldiers and their families they really care

The summer picnic sponsored by Montesano Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2455 last Friday was much more than hot dogs and ice cream, games and spending time with friends and family. About 80 National Guard soldiers stationed at the Armory near Montesano who are preparing to head out for a year’s duty in Iraq were the VFW’s guests of honor at their Montesano picnic grounds.

About 40 of the soldiers’ families also attended. There were games, great eats and an afternoon with loved ones — but there was also the added feature of folks wanting the members of Alpha Battery 2-146 Field Artillery to know how very much they are appreciated. For some members of the unit, which had returned the day before from pre-deployment training in Yakima, it won’t be their first tour of duty in Iraq.

ELMA — The Fairgrounds Indoor Pavilion was nearly stretched to capacity as fair-goers packed the area for the 2008 Bull Blast on Saturday in Elma. The annual bull riding and barrel racing events took place in conjunction with the Grays Harbor County Fair and showcased 34 of the top bull riders on the west coast, as well as 32 barrel racing locals, all aiming at the night’s top prize money.

At the end of the evening, Culver, Ore.’s Charlie Barker and Mulino, Ore.’s T.R. Wheeler split the top-spot of the Bull Blast. Barker and Wheeler each scored an 82 in their average ride – sending both to the final-six. Nobody in the final-six rode for the full eight seconds leaving the standings as they were before the final round ride.

County may call for outside review
As criticism of Grays Harbor County’s planning and building department becomes increasingly vocal, political and even personal, the county commissioners have been asked by the staff to initiate an outside review.
“We’re of the belief this could be a good thing for our county and for our staff,” Paul Easter, director of public services told the commissioners on Monday. “Our staff is saying all we want to do is good public service. If we can get better, we would want to get better.”
Easter said the International Code Council is the agency that virtually wrote the building code and they have a review program. At least two of the three commissioners are all for it.
“Have them get in touch with the commissioners,” Chairman Al Carter of Hoquiam said. “It needs to be a review run by the commissioners — a complete third party review done for us.
Montesano Council approves pact;
now clerks to decide
The Montesano City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to authorize a proposed three-year contract with its public works and clerical employees — the non-uniformed employees.
They are represented by Teamster’s Local No. 252. The shop steward, Debbie Wisdom, said Wednesday morning that she didn’t want to discuss details of the offer until she has a chance to brief the membership, but she plans to recommend a favorable vote at the Aug. 19 meeting.
Mayor Ron Schillinger was not available for comment Wednesday on the details of the proposed contract, which became public upon the vote of the council.
The contract, if approved by the membership of 15, is for 2008-2010.
The clerk’s contract expired on Dec. 31, 2007, and negotiations have been under way, off and on, since last fall.
Asked whether it’s been difficult working without a contract and negotiating past the expiration date, Wisdom said, “It always takes a little longer than you think it should go, but I’m pleased that it didn’t take as long as our last one.”
Council members were briefed for about 90 minutes by their labor consultant, Puget Sound Public Employers, before emerging to take the 4-1 vote.
Voting in favor were council members Nick Swinhart, Chris Hutchings, Albert Collins and Doug Streeter. Voting against without comment was Councilman Pat Herrington. Council members Rich Klinger and Chris Thomas were absent.
The council has yet to reach an agreement with its police officers and the firefighters.

Sport fishing season still in full swing off Westport coast
WESTPORT – In recent days, fishing off the coast near Westport has been great at times, according to executive director of the Westport Charterboat Association, Mark Cedergreen.
As this unusual fishing season unfolds, according to Cedergreen, Coho salmon are becoming scarce, but the Chinook salmon catches are abundant.
Late last week we have experienced “good ole days-style fishing” Cedergreen said.
“Most charter boats were back early in the marina with their fishing limits - mostly Chinook - ranging from 15-25 pounds,” he said.
