Saturday, Aug. 15

• The WSU Master Gardeners of Grays Harbor and Pacific counties will host a plant clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dennis Co.
Sunday, Aug. 23
• The Dance Club of Grays Harbor will host dancing to the music of the Country 4 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 200 W. Market St. Cost is $6 per person and includes refreshments.
Beaches
Friday-Saturday, Aug. 14-15
• Funk Factory will perform from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Ocean Lounge at Quinault Beach Resort.
Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 15-16
• The Westport Maritime Museum will play host to the 12th Annual Westport Art Festival Aug. 15-16. The event will take place on the museum grounds and the Marina Esplanade from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday. The festival will also feature food vendors, free entertainment and activities for kids. There is no charge for admission.

Saturday, Aug. 15

Tuesday, Aug. 18
• A food handler class is scheduled for 3-4:30 p.m. at the WSU Extension office at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds.Those planning to attend are asked to arrive 15-20 minutes early to register and bring a driver’s license or other picture ID and their current, valid Washington State food handler card if they have one. The class will cover proper food handling, hand washing techniques, cooking and cooling temperatures, cleansing and sanitation of utensils, pans and cooking surfaces and more. Cost is $10. • Mixx 96.1 KXXO radio will host its annual school supply drive for the Little Red Schoolhouse Project from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. live outside its studio at the corner of State and Washington streets in downtown Olympia. Listeners can drop off basic school supplies, backpacks and new or clean used clothing.

Grays Harbor Area
Friday, Aug. 14

• The Schafer State Park Team will host a family event and historical presentation at 7 p.m. at the park, 10 miles north of Brady. Captain “Doc” Shores (aka Gerald Schafer of Central Park) of the U.S. 7th Calvary will be dressed in full uniform for his presentation on the role of the calvary in protecting pioneer wagon trains traveling west in the 1850s. His stories will feature immigrant movement westward, mountain men and Indian wars. There is no cost.
Through Aug. 31
• A photography and digital art show, “Grays Harbor’s Scenic Waterways” by Kathleen Praxel, is on exhibit at the Amanda Park Timberland Library. The photographs featuring local areas as well as powwows have been picked up by several magazines.

Hoquiam
Saturday, Aug. 15

• Coastal Harvest will host an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Ambassadors will perform a ribbon-cutting for the newest Grays Harbor Chamber of Commerce member at 12:30 p.m. Coastal Harvest, formerly the Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties Food Bank Distribution Center, is at 520 Tyler St.
• The Dance Club of Grays Harbor will host a “Saturday Night Fever” dance party from 7-11 p.m. at the Masonic Hall, 513 K St. Music will be by The Musicman, Charlie Baer. A free nightclub two-step dance lesson taught by Arlene Hoiland will take place from 7-8 p.m. General dancing, mixers, demos, refreshments and raffle prizes will be offered from 8-11 p.m. Cost is $6 per member and $10 per guest. Singles are welcome.
Tuesday, Aug. 18
• Families Against Methamphetamines will sponsor a support group for families and friends of addicts from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Harbor Assembly of God, 716 M St., in the fellowship hall in the back of the church. Organizers say that participants will be able to share with others, become educated and receive encouragement. For more information, call Sue at 533-2619.
Thursday, Aug. 20
• The Grays Harbor Art Guild invites everyone to “The Harbor Poetry Project” from 7-9 p.m. at The Six Rivers Gallery, located behind Levee Lumber. The event is free; guests need to bring their own chairs. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call Lori Maki at 532-7767.

McCleary
Thursday, Aug. 20

• Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support groups provide opportunities for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are also caring for people with dementia. Recognizing that some rural caregivers find it challenging to attend traditional support groups, the association has a telephone support group that offers the benefits of a face-to-face group without the need to leave home. The toll-free teleconference group will be available from 7:30 to 9 p.m., facilitated by registered nurse Barbara Bridges. Those interested in participating or who would like more information can contact Linda Whiteside at (800) 848-7097 or linda.whiteside@alz.org.
Thursdays, through Sept. 3
• Children are offered arts and crafts in the covered picnic area at the park, from 1 to 2 p.m. for ages 5-8, 2-3 p.m. for kids 9-12 and 3-4 p.m. for teens. All materials are supplied, but it can be messy so participants are advised to wear clothes that can get paint on them. Crafts will include painting, bead creations, mosaics, foam art, crepe paper creations and more. There is no charge. Teen and adult volunteers are welcome.

• The McCleary Food Bank is open from 9:30 to 11 a.m. the second and fourth Mondays of each month, across from the fire station on the park side downtown. Anyone who lives in the 98557 zip code is welcome.

Tuesday, Aug. 18

• The city council will have a workshop meeting at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at 112 N. Main St.
• The Grays Harbor County Civil Service Commission will meet at 5 p.m. in room 211 of the Forestry Building, 310 W. Spruce.
Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 18-20
• “Outrigger Island,” a three-day vacation Bible school, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon each day at the First Baptist Church. Children ages 5-9 are invited. The VBS will feature a tropical adventure with music, crafts, recreation, drama, Bible study and snacks. Registration is free; forms can be picked up at the church, 303 W. • GriefShare recovery seminar and support group meets from 7-8:30 p.m. each Thursday at the Church of God, 317 E. Spruce St. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. “Living with Grief” will be discussed Aug. 13 and “The Journey of Grief” on Aug. 20. • Montesano High School alumni from 1950s and early 1960s will have their monthly social at 1 p.m. at Gepetto’s Restaurant, 126 E. Pioneer Ave. The gatherings on the third Thursday of each month include visiting, laughing and sharing stories about growing up in a small town during that time. Wednesday: Pork roast, scalloped potatoes, tomato/cucumber salad and fruit dessert.
Thursday: Taco soup, corn bread, Jell-O and churros.
Friday: Sweet and sour chicken, rice, green salad and orange cake.
