Historic election on Grays Harbor, too |

History made on two fronts

Tuesday was a presidential election, but voters in Grays Harbor County were watching the returns in their neck of the woods, as well, where history was being made on two fronts: Grays Harbor was among the counties supporting Barack Obama in his bid to become the nation’s first black president, and Terry Willis of Brady is on her way to becoming the county’s first female commissioner.

Willis, a Democrat, posted a commanding lead over Republican Ken Estes of Montesano when initial returns were posted Tuesday, 10,826 votes to his 7,702, giving her 58.4 percent of the vote so far.
For Willis, it isn’t about gender; it’s about becoming a Grays Harbor County commissioner.

On time and on budget

Given all the dire news about the state of the economy nationwide and even locally, it was with a pleased — and relieved — expression that Montesano Superintendent Marti Harruff announced at the Oct. 16 meeting of the School Board that the project to build a new Simpson School is “on time and on budget.”

As of two weeks ago, about $2.7 million had been spent toward the $14 million project. The project is about 15 percent complete and on time for a fall of 2009 opener, Harruff said.

Elma man’s naval career spanned 27 years
The infamous day Pearl Harbor was bombed — Dec. 7, 1941 — Bob Winings was a 17-year-old student at Elma High School. Hardly more than a year later, though, Winings joined the Navy Reserve and was soon a gunner’s mate. In a naval career spanning 27 years, he not only served in both World War II and the Korean War, but did, indeed, see the world, including Pearl Harbor several times. Liberty in foreign ports was one thing he loved most about the Navy. Now Winings will see a bit of the world, his hometown of Elma, from a special perspective — as this year’s grand marshal of the town’s Veteran’s Day Parade.
The parade will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, from Elma High School, proceeding down Main Street to A Street. Elma’s Bill Mann Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1948 also plans a ceremony at 11 a.m. Veterans Day at the Edward Silas Morton Jr. Memorial Park at the east end of town.
Elma City Council tackling budget
At their regular meeting Monday, which immediately followed a work session on next year’s budget, the Elma City Council set a public hearing on the budget for Dec. 1. The budget work session was the council’s second, with a third planned for 6 p.m. next Monday, Nov. 10.
Council members also approved an application by M & M Harbor Properties for access to city water, with a number of conditions recommended by the city’s Public Works director, Jim Starks, including that the work needed to extend the water line to the property at 36 Stamper Hill Road be completed to the city’s standards.

Christmas for troops and families
Jerry Hliboki’s at it again. Actually, he’s never quit. The Montesano AMVET member, with the help of the Monte Veterans of Foreign Wars and myriad community businesses and individuals, headed up a picnic last summer for the National Guard troops from the nearby Armory who were being assigned to Iraq.
The event at the VFW picnic grounds was a rousing success. But that was then. Now Christmas is coming, and Hliboki refuses to forget the soldiers — or their loved ones. He’s been planning for weeks, and now he’s bustling about, procuring everything needed to send Christmas packages and other parcels to the troops and put on a huge Christmas dinner in mid-December for the folks they had to leave behind.

Bighill is a player with heart, ‘exceeds expectations’
ELLENSBURG — Whenever Adam Bighill was on a basketball court or a football field, his mother, Janine, was always there in the stands, supporting him. From Pop Warner league through middle school, he could always rely on looking to the bleachers and seeing her there.
Now Adam is a sophomore middle linebacker at Central Washington University, miles from his home in Montesano. His family can no longer be there to watch him, but every time he gets on one knee before each game, he dedicates his performance to his mother. She isn’t watching him from the bleachers, but he believes that she’s cheering him on from above.
