Montesano’s Top 10 graduates

Every member of the Class of 2008 has passed the WASL .

For nearly a decade the pressure has been mounting as the Class of 2008 grew closer to graduation. These students are the first who are required to meet new state standards in order to graduate. They have to pass the WASL — the Washington Assessment of Student Learning — or its equivalent, complete a “culminating project” in their senior year and they must articulate a “13th year” plan for their first year out of high school.

The pressure has been on both the students and the entire education system in the State of Washington. This week, Gov. Chris Gregoire declared the effort nothing less than a wholesale transformation of the education system. Statewide, more than 91 percent of high school seniors have passed the reading and writing standards on the WASL, she announced. There was a period of time when the 90 percent goal was roundly criticized as too lofty.

A real ‘plus’ for Elma

Rain notwithstanding, owners Frank Dickson and Ginny Scott of Peonies Plus in Elma harvest armfuls of the huge blossoms Tuesday. This “Red Charm” variety, one of 90 thriving in their fields, really is “a charmer,” Dickson enthused. It’s also fragrant, reminding him of cinnamon. The three-year old business at 41 Calder Road will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. daily through June 15. Other times can also be arranged.

The flowers are also sold to wholesalers, and folks can purchase roots to grow their own, as well. All are also invited just to visit. “They don’t have to buy,” Dickson said. “We want them to come out and just enjoy what we’ve done.” For more information, call (360) 490-3608.

Washington State Class 1A Champions

Bulldogs notch eight individual championships

WHITE SALMON – Behind five individual title winners, the Montesano boys nearly doubled the point output of the second place team and ran away with their fifth state powerlifting title in a row on Saturday, May 31, at White Salmon. The Monte girls were also poised to win a fifth straight title, but were nipped by White Salmon for the team championship. The Bulldog boys amassed 65 points, which was 31 better than the runner-up Bruins at 34.

“This was a successful year all the way around,” Coach Eric Stanfield said.
“It just goes to show all of the hard work they have put in.”
I’m proud of them (repeating as champs) after losing who graduated last year, Stanfield said.

“It just goes to show all of the hard work they have put in." I’m proud of them (repeating as champs) after losing (several) who graduated last year, Stanfield said. Last year’s seniors’ work ethic has transferred over to the younger kids. Stanfield added. “They see the success and want to be a part of it.”

This year’s Relays ‘hope-full’ events

With the air as clear as crystal last weekend, albeit stirred by a brisk wind Saturday, more than 400 people joined in the annual Cancer Relay For Life event at the county fairgrounds in Elma. Hundreds more did the same at Hoquiam High School’s “Seabreeze Oval” track. Most lent their feet to the cause, walking lap after lap — some for the entire 24 hours, which began at 6 p.m. Friday.

Board’s policy bans cell phones during school hours in Montesano

Students in the Montesano School District will no longer be allowed to use their cell phones and other hand-held electronic devices during school hours or on the bus under a policy the School Board adopted May 29. In deference to parents who often desire to speak with their student before or after school, the board decided not to impose an outright ban. “We believe this is a policy we can live with,” Superintendent Marti Harruff told the board. “We do not want to prohibit students from having cell phones or technology on campus, but they may not be on during school time. … It’s an enforceable policy that we can live with and that can be monitored by staff.”

District 5 to place EMS levy on ballot
With a packed meeting room of about two dozen guests, Grays Harbor Fire District commissioners addressed a number of hot issues at their meeting last Monday. They voted to place a levy on the ballot in November, addressed a recent letter to the district’s Ambulance Advisory Committee about a potential joint private ambulance service and wrestled yet again with looming financial issues and what the future might hold. With Jerry Bailey and Matt Howarth present and Eric Patton, who is working out of the area, on speaker phone, the commissioners unanimously passed a resolution to place an emergency services levy of 50 cents per thousand of assessed valuation on the Nov. 4 ballot. That would mean the owner of a $100,000 home would pay $50.

Shoemaker, VanDam, Simpson and Taylor winners at Raceway

ELMA – Whether it was a convincing wire-to-wire victory, a sixth to first run, a win helped by mechanical failure or the institution of new rule for a victory – fans at Grays Harbor Raceway saw it all as Blair Shoemaker, Henry VanDam, Zack Simpson and Samantha Taylor took the feature races on Saturday, May 31. Shoemaker of Yakima led from start to finish in the 25-lap Modified main event, which persevered through a light bank outage in turn-two with six laps left in the race.
