To earn money to attend two invitational meets in Alaska in September, the Elma High School Cross Country team is selling fireworks. Pictured above, Chris Peek, at right, browses the inventory at the fireworks stand operated by Cross Country Coach Dave Beeler. Their stand at 401 W. Main St. in Elma, in front of Grays Harbor Pellet Heat, will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. through July 4 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 5. Beeler notes that the fund-raising stand was begun 20 years ago by then-Coach Mark Keating, who is now principal of Elma Elementary School. For six years, the two coached the team together. The tractors will again be rumbling onto the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds — just in time for the 27th annual Antique Tractor & Engine Show and Swap Meet on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. This is the second year that the show, sponsored by the Antique Farm Engine & Tractor Association, will take place at the fairgrounds in Elma. It will include displays of vintage motors and antique tractors, demonstrations of drag saws cutting large logs, an old truck display and a roaring tractor pull.

Ocean Shores center of annual Garden Tour

The Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties Master Gardeners again will present a spectacular tour of gardens in Grays Harbor. This year’s tour, “The Beach in Bloom,” will take place at Ocean Shores and promises to be one of the best, organizers say.

Four of the five gardens are owned by Master Gardeners and will feature a wide variety of plant materials. The fifth garden is a lovely retreat behind a garden wall and located very near the ocean. This year’s attendees will learn about specific techniques and successful plants for our coastal climate. One garden will display more than 100 varieties of dahlias. This is an event folks will not want to miss.

“The Beach in Bloom” is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 19. Tickets are $10 and will be available at Gallery Marjuli at Ocean Shores, Marshall’s Garden and Pet in Aberdeen, Harbor Drug in Hoquiam, Valu Drug in Montesano, Elma Variety Store in Elma and the Coastal Garden Center in Grayland.

Church’s new pastor says ‘yes’ to God

Arriving in town May 29, Montesano First Baptist’s new pastor and his family had traveled a long way to get there. Pastor Randy Brown, 43, is a Louisiana native who has pastored two churches in his home state. He and his wife, Kerri, a native of Oklahoma, have also served as missionaries in various places in South Asia.

Myers moves on from Monte Health & Rehab
Terry Myers, administrator at the Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center for almost five years, is moving on. But she’s not leaving her profession, one she makes no secret of being in love with. She also has high praise for the Monte center.

Now, however, she’s not only changing employers, she’s moving out of the area to Bainbridge Island, where she will be the administrator of the Messenger House Care Center. That center is another skilled nursing facility, “except that it also has a secured Alzheimer’s unit, so it’s a little bigger,” Myers said.

The Montesano center’s new administrator will be David Miller, who is currently the administrator at the Fir Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shelton. Miller, who lives in Elma, will begin his new position at Monte Health and Rehab on July 11.
